Drawing on the material in the background readings and doing additional research, please prepare a 5- to 6-page paper (not including the cover and reference pages) in which you
1. Examine the characteristics of culturally aware leaders.
2. Choose one major area of the world, e.g., Middle East, China, Japan, etc., and examine the characteristics of leaders in that area in terms of how they relate to their people. What are the key areas they focus on? What are the “taboos” that they must stay away from? 
3. What are the characteristics a Westerner must adapt to be successful leading in their country / area? 
Keys to the Assignment
• Choose a leader whose exemplifies cross-cultural leadership sensitivities. You might want to choose a leader of a Fortune Top 100 Companies to Work For 2014 from the website http://www(dot)greatplacetowork(dot)com/best-companies/100-best-companies-to-work-for, e.g., the new CEO of Microsoft, or someone that you know personally that has been written about in a reputable magazine or journal article
• Research the leader and his/her organization, and then answer the following questions.
o What are the key characteristics this leader exhibits? Are they ubiquitous across cultures, or are the different depending on the person / culture with whom they are interacting / leading?
o Evaluate your leader using the GLOBE Taxonomy in terms of his/her ability to lead a diverse population.
o What impact / affect does this leadership style have on the organization’s overall image and how they conduct their “business”?
o Based on your experiences and research, what kind of leadership style is needed to promote excellence in a culturally-diverse organization? Justify your response.
• These are not the only things must be covered, but are the minimum. You are encouraged to go deeper with the assignment and use your critical thinking skills to ascertain what other areas are important in making a company one of the top ones in which to work
Assignment Expectations
Your paper will be evaluated using the following five criteria:
• Assignment-Driven Criteria (Precision and Breadth): Does the paper fully address all Keys to the Assignment? Are the concepts behind the Keys to the Assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements? 
• Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking and Depth): Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis?
• Business Writing (Clarity and Organization): Is the paper well written (clear, developed logically, and well organized)? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included in all papers? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding to the Keys to the Assignment, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations? 
• Effective Use of Information (Information Literacy and References): Does the paper demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used in paper provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper? 
• Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion of proper end references and in-text citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all end references been included within the body of the paper as in-text citations?
Tips and Suggestions
Please note the following tips and suggestions:
• Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 5–6 pages of analysis described above.
• Include headings for all papers greater than 2 pages (basically all papers)
• Cite AND reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you do not quote but paraphrase. This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than 5 words, and citations for that information which you have "borrowed" or paraphrased from other sources.

Introduction
Technology continues to play a pivotal in promoting uniform development across the globe. IT is a result of technology that there is interconnectedness throughout the world reducing into a global village. People across far distances can now interact virtually without the challenge of distance. With the level of interaction heightened, barriers such as language, culture and race are quickly being overcome. People are now not just limited to interact just with the people around them. Instead, people are moving from their countries and relocating to new places and working for foreign organizations.
Cultural diversity has become increasingly common in most organizations. Unlike in the past where organizations would have everybody from the same cultural background, times have changed. It is now common to find an organization with employees from multiple cultural backgrounds. It is necessary that leaders learn to handle the multiplicity and diversity of cultural back grounds.
A Culturally Aware Leader
A culturally aware leader is one who is flexible than rigid when it comes to issues of culture within an organization (Thomson, 2011). Such a leader is open to diverse ideas emanating from the multiple ethnic diversities represented within an organization. One characteristic of a culturally aware leader is that they are open-minded. This means that they are not fixated on issues of culture and allow others from other cultures to give out their different view on an issue. A culturally aware is also accommodative and tolerant to other cultures. Ethnocentrism is certainly an enemy of cultural diversity. For leader to successfully manage an organization with cultural, they must shed off any traces of ethnocentrism.
Leaders in the Middle East
Middle East is one of the regions of the world whose people are still deep rooted in their culture. Even with infiltration from immigrants from other parts of the world, these countries have managed to have a culture that is yet to be eroded. However, leaders of this region have been heavily criticized for having fixated mindsets when dealing with people from other cultures. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, the culture requires women to be very conservative in their dressing. The same is expected of women from other parts of the world who are seeking to be part of that community (Kumar et al, 2009). Demand for conformity is not the problem, but rather the harsh penalties which in some cases include death for those who flout cultural requirements. This is certainly archaic measures that have no place in modern society. People must be allowed to freely express their culture without being forced to conform to other cultures.
Some of the taboos that leaders from the Middle East must abandon and keep away from is that women are lesser as compared to their male counterparts. In modern day society, it has been proven that women are just as capable as men. The culture in the Middle East has pushed woman to a corner of domestic chores (McChrystal, 2011).
