Teressa, Bakketeig, and Magnus (2015) carried out an observational study to explore the link between alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy and the associated risk of pre-term births. The researchers used questionnaires as the main method of collecting data for the study. Each questionnaire contained questions on the number of alcohol usage each week, month, or lack of usage throughout. The Advantage of using the method of questionnaires was relevant for this study as it allowed the researchers to collect enough data for the study within a short time. Additionally, questionnaires simplified data collection as researchers could access significant data on the topic and easily compare with previous research conducted on the topic.
Data from Teressa et al.’s research study (2015) was quantitative. The quantitative method was chosen to answer the research question “How many…?” For instance, in table 1.0 of the study, the recorded number of mothers that had never consumed alcohol was 3040, representing a percentage of 7.7 of the overall 44,300 mothers that participated in the study.
