Research Proposal: The Obesity Epidemic
Public health plays an imperative part in the preservation of the health and quality of life of current and future generations. However, the obesity epidemic seems to present a great threat to this aspect of human life. A high number of health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes have been linked to obesity, making it a serious threat to public health. The key thus lies in providing mechanisms that can help the public stay healthy by maintaining a healthy weight, thus keeping certain diseases at bay.
The number of people in America dealing with overweight and obesity issues is increasing at an alarming rate, and it is not only affecting adults, but also children. Children are the future of the country, which means that the country’s future is greatly endangered. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescent is approximately 18.5%, affecting approximately 13.7 million kids. This data is alarming given that children with obesity are most likely to get into adulthood with obesity. Also, the CDC also reveals that the prevalence of obesity among American adults is 39.8%. This implies that approximately 93.3 million adults in the U.S are at a greater risk of exposure to the diseases mentioned above. My interest in this issue is mainly on how the country can salvage the situation without placing the responsibility wholly on the public health field.
