Does Improved Communication Decrease Marital Conflict?
Introduction
Dent (2006) looked into the issues of communication in marriage and agreed that conflict arises because of communication mismatch by a couple. In most cases, it results to fights and unnecessary drama which affects the well-being and stability of the family. This research proposal will evaluate whether improved communication decreases marital conflicts. Ahn and Kim (2008) studied marriage and came to the conclusion that marital conflicts refer to a series of events that have been poorly handled such that they deeply damage marriage relationships. In the contemporary society, marital conflicts are on the rise and majority of psychologist tends to explain that communication plays a vital role hence the need to improve communication for better outcomes in marital issues. There has been an increased debate on the effectiveness of communication in marital conflicts which is used as a foundation for the research.
Marriage and communication
Marriage is often regarded as the pillar of society, but this institution is quickly crumbling due to the increased marital conflicts in modern society. Scholars have often identified a relationship between effective communication and better outcomes in dealing with marital issues (Esere, & Oladun, 2014). Therefore, the importance of effective communication has been highlighted in a marriage partnership, and it involves both parties to implement better communication models. The increased marital conflicts have often been associated with the lack of better communication channels where each party expresses their concerns. A breakdown in communication often leads to disappointments and anger, which escalates the conflicts too often at extreme levels. However, apart from communication, there are other factors that play a critical role in resolving marital conflicts, including persistence, understanding, and patience from both partners. Studies indicate that partners in marriage tend to be happier through better communication models and styles (Madahi, Samadzadeh, & Javidi, 2013).
Correspondence is important in communication, especially in a marriage partnership, as it allows both partners to know what their partner's thoughts are about conflicting issues. Communication is a two-way process that allows both the listener and speaker to share their thoughts. Therefore, by corresponding to each other's concerns, marriage partners are better placed to resolve their issues quickly and amicably as they understand the perspective of the other (Esere, & Oladun, 2014). Adequate correspondence among partners illustrates a better communication strategy which is helpful in creating harmony and peace while reducing conflicts. Therefore, correspondence facilitates the sharing of messages, thoughts, and emotions, which enhances comprehension between the sender and receiver of a message.
