Background of the Study
From my experience, young people always transform language and communication to meet their needs and diversification. With the onset of globalization, social media, and technology, communication processes have dynamically transformed into unique intercultural and intracultural patterns allowing people to devise constantly changing methods of communication and language. Case in point, many of my peers and I tend to use new modes of communication such as emoji, short acronyms, and unique slang that make language uniquely suited for our communication needs. For instance, now, people can communicate without writing long sentences by only using GIF images, stickers, and emojis.
The opening of the Arab world to Western civilization has been fueled by new technical developments, telecommunication advances, and globalization activities. Because of the internationalization of English-based technology, the current Arab generation depends on the western alphabet as the primary writing system while conversing in spoken Arabic through the internet media. Particularly, youngsters in the Arab community have begun to use a new digital language known as "Arabizi" due to the rise of social media sites. The language has taken over the internet, and it is characterized by writing Arabic words with Roman letters and numerals, hence replacing the Arabic alphabet. Alternatively, Arabizi can be defined as a shorthand that combines conventional Arabic numbers with English ones. The integrity of contemporary Standard Arabic, Arabic's conventional alphabet, has been questioned as a result. The opinions of Arab teenagers about the usage of Arabizi or Latinized Arabic are explored in this research.
