The research paper requires you to write 6-7 pages—with separate page(s) of final bibliography with full citations of sources—on an approved theme exploring, analyzing, and critiquing an aspect of a particular empire. This can focus on a nation within a larger imperial system; a key issue in a specific empire; or other related themes. You might also choose to examine a key individual within an historic empire.


Regardless of your topic, the paper should reflect a thorough understanding of historical—political, cultural, economic and social—depending on which most pertain to your chosen theme. Please keep focused so as to avoid compiling a superficial “laundry list” that simply groups items together.
Your paper should reflect solid research, analysis, and good organization and the argument should assess the strength, effectiveness, and longevity of the aspect of imperial rule you have chosen—whether from point of view of rulers or subjects.
Your argument/interpretation should be drawn from various sources— including, where appropriate, the Rule of Empires—as well as scholarly articles; books available from the Lehman College library and local libraries; and other sources—including, but some available on the Internet (all require proper attribution in the bibliography). At least six are required for the proposal—several of these should be scholarly.
Finally, two maps must accompany this paper—please submit these at the end of the paper, following the bibliography. These should illuminate the historical analysis.

I chose to focus on the topic of Songhai Empire as it was a thriving empire in West Africa that connected North African sub-Saharan Africa. The empire was established on, established on both banks of the Niger River, built a powerful state that unified much of Western Sudan in West African and linked Mediterranean world and sub-Saharan Africa. Beginning in the second half of the fourteenth century, the Malian Empire declined because of internal rebellions, foreign attacks and palace rivalries. Parsons, Chapter 3 “Muslim Spain: Blurring Subject hood in Imperial Al-Andalus” in Parsons is most relevant to compare the development of the Songhai Empire, where international trade, war, and religion influenced development of the empires. The Songhai Empire broke free and emerged as an independent empire from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century (Amoah‐Boampong, 2016). Gao the capital of the Songhai state, prospered because of the trans-Saharan trade, serving as a crossing point for important routes from north Africa. The Songhai Empire, thrived when there was a strong army, consolidation of the Mali Empire and control of the trans-Saharan trade routes, but Moroccan invasion caused the empire to collapse.
