Ways Ethics and Accountability are Enacted in Dr. Ducey’s Study
Despite being an insider who faced the challenges that loner mothers in the region went through, the author understood that the protocols for ethics and accountability were to be followed during the research. For example, she strives to meet an ethical obligation by offering potential participants an opportunity for informed consent. The author indicates that before the actual research, she prepared a script that she presented to the residents during their respective monthly meetings (Ducey, 2013). In this script, the researcher tries to connect with the audience by explaining her experiences as a lone mother and having been raised by a young single mother (Ducey, 2013). She does not hide her understanding regarding the issues of disruption every day of life and extended period of engagement. She shows a high level of accountability because she took more than nine months before receiving a notification for approval to proceed with her research (Ducey, 2013). She spent a great share of these months interacting with the residents. During this time, she insists that participants will only be enrolled in the study if they are willing to do so voluntarily. Ducey confirms that participants were free to fail to respond to some of the questions asked during the survey or even halt their involvement mid-way.
