Business Ethics: The Parable of the Sadhu
The Parable of the Sadhu is a story about a trip to a Nepalese holy village and the ethical dilemma encountered by the travelers. According to the parable, McCoy and other groups of hikers were in the middle of climbing the mountains of Nepal headed to a holy village when they discovered a Sadhu, one of the holy Nepalese men who had wandered the countryside asking for food and was suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia (McCoy, 1997). The man lacked enough clothes to keep him warm and was shivering from the cold. Some individuals from the groups gave him warm clothes, food and drink but did not assist him further. One person was compassionate and suggested they carry the man to the nearest village (McCoy, 1997). The other groups refused and proceeded with their journey, leaving the Sadhu lying on the rock. No one knows if the man survived. The story describes how the hikers were concerned with reaching the holy place, neglecting their ethical roles.
This story holds a lesson for those in business organizations because it teaches individuals in the corporate world the need to develop cultures that support the moral values needed for business success. These values guide individuals to make ethical decisions when faced with ethical dilemmas (McCracken et al.,1998). Any business organization is bound to encounter an ethical dilemma, and leaders must decide on the best action to take. In such situations, it is always important to think before deciding, bearing in mind that there is a thin line between right and wrong.
