Evangelism Techniques in a Postmodern World
As a Christian, one has a responsibility to reach people for Christ in post-modern times. The post-modern mindset is a major obstacle that one must overcome before one can effectively reach out to new converts. Postmodernism emphasizes relativism, skepticism towards grand narratives and meta-narratives, and a focus on individual experience and interpretation, which can make it challenging for individuals to accept absolute truth claims and traditional religious doctrine. This can make it harder to convert people to Christianity or any other religion that relies on the acceptance of certain beliefs and truth claims. Additionally, postmodernism may also lead to a lack of interest in organized religion and a focus on personal spirituality, making it even more challenging to convert someone to a specific faith. Thus, it is essential to adopt and apply various techniques to ease one’s ability to reach people for Christ who have a postmodern mindset.
Emphasis on Shared Values
Emphasizing shared values can play an important role in reaching people for Christ who have a postmodern mindset. By highlighting the shared values between Christianity and postmodern beliefs, it helps to build trust, create common ground, and foster open and respectful dialogue. For people with a postmodern mindset, values such as empathy, compassion, and social justice are often important, and emphasizing these values in discussions about Christianity can help to demonstrate that the faith is in line with their beliefs. By focusing on these shared values, individuals can help to dispel any negative stereotypes or misconceptions about Christianity, and instead, present the faith as one that is relevant and supportive of postmodern values. In this way, emphasizing common values can help to build bridges between different belief systems and promote understanding, while also providing an entry point for deeper conversations about the Christian faith.
In the article “The Touch of Truth,” Zacharias notes that one can be able to reach an audience in post-modern society by appealing to the common values between individuals as human beings. The shared value as posited in the article is love. When trying to reach people in modern times, one must consider that the point of relevance in modern times is the hunger for love. Most of the audience that one will minister to doubt the existence of metanarrative or exclusivity or the existence of the objective truth. On the other hand, Christians proclaim that one can only be able to reach God through accepting Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The proclamation is radical and may be unpalatable to most of the audience that one is seeking to reach out to unless it is undergirded by a common or shared value.
Notably, satisfying the hunger for love is one of the most effective ways through which one shall be able to reach more people for Christ regardless of their post-modern mindset. Zacharias observes that most of the recent converts intimated that the level of care they were shown by a Christian was one of the two major reasons that explained their de...
