Domestic violence has been increasing, primarily due to the restrictions placed on movement due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Various countries have announced numerous measures to combat the deadly disease while also protecting the health systems (Kofman & Garfin, 2020). However, these interventions also have unintended outcomes. As infections rise globally, people are now exposed to new stresses, such as psychological and physical risks, loneliness, and isolation. Additionally, women and children as more vulnerable to domestic violence (Bradbury‐Jones & Isham, 2020). Domestic violence is a term that means a wide array of violations that occur within the home and involves intimate partner violence. The number of women and children undergoing domestic violence has been on the rise due to covid-19 restrictions.
Escalation of Violence
Research studies have shown that the rates of domestic violence can escalate due to crises. The restrictions in place due to covid-19 force more people to stay at home longer. They can only leave the house for essential purposes such as purchasing medication, food, or when the person has a role as a critical worker (Bradbury‐Jones & Isham, 2020). These restrictions mean that it exposes women who are in abusive relationships to more risks. For instance, in Brazil, the calls to domestic helpline numbers have been on the rise by 20%, while the number has risen by over 25% in the UK since the lockdown restriction started (Bradbury‐Jones & Isham, 2020). The extended limits also have a more devastating effect since families without a flow of income are exposed to more stress, leading to domestic violence.
