Executive Summary
The exploration of Mars is a pertinent issue in contemporary society. With the advancement in knowledge-based systems, robots are being used in a wide variety of applications. The applications include exploring Mars and other planets. Exploration by humans comes with some advantages, such as increased cognitive ability, the ability to make detailed observations, and greater public approval. On the other hand, robot exploration comes with little or no safety issues and offers durability as robots can stay on the planet for long durations. When it comes to cost, human exploration appears to be relatively more costly. Human exploration requires specialized spacecraft and supplies needed for human survival. On the other hand, other than initial costs, robots do not require food, medication, water, oxygen, and other supplies.
Introduction
Mars has been considered one of the planets whose conditions are significantly similar to those of the earth. Although there are enormous differences in the conditions between these two planets, the differences are not as wide compared to those existing between earth and other planets (Bartone et al., 42). Exploring mars has been of interest to humans for a long time now. One of the debates that arise when considering this exploration is the best approach to use. Some argue that robotic exploration is better, while others consider human exploration as the better option. This paper will compare and contrast the benefits of human versus robot exploration of mars. In addition, the report will compare and contrast the costs of human versus robot exploration on Mars.
Benefits of Exploration by Humans
Humans are endowed with cognitive abilities. These abilities are greatly advanced in humans. As a result, human beings are best suited to conduct scientific experiments on Mars. The ability to make inferences from observations can greatly help humans come up with groundbreaking discoveries in their exploration of Mars. Further, while carrying out scientific experiments, human beings are able to keep detailed records of observations, unlike robots which are preprogrammed on how to behave (Bartone et al., 42). Secondly, human beings have the ability to make decisions at a faster rate compared to robotics. Humans also have the ability to make instant decisions where need be. Evidence shows that the ability to make quick decisions is vital when carrying out activities or missions where quick responses are a necessity. For instance, during the Apollo 13 exploration to the moon, the human astronaut was able to think quickly and make a decision concerning a life-threatening technical hitch. The ability to make quick decisions helped the mission become a success.
Thirdly, human exploration is beneficial in the sense that it receives a lot of public support and confidence. People are often amazed when human beings go to other planets and make discoveries. When huma...
