A world's social, economic, and political collapse could have devastating effects on people’s lives. Various movies have been produced to show how a failure of these factors could result in an eco-apocalypse. One of such movies is Kevin Reynold's movie, WaterWorld. The film outlines a world that has been fully submerged in water due to climatic change. The survivors live on water and search for dry land, later discovered on the top of Mount Everest. The movie is an example of what an economic and social collapse can do to the world. Therefore, this paper will outline WaterWorld's events concerning Diamond, Nolan, & Lenski.
Diamond outlines five factors that could result in the collapse of the world. One of the factors related to the movie is climatic change. The main reason the world in the film is underwater is climate change. The climatic change caused global warming, which led to the melting of the icebergs in the world. The melting icebergs led to a rise in sea levels, thus covering all the continents in the world. The survivors in the movie live in floating communities, which they refer to as atolls. Such is an indication of the devastating effects of climatic change and how it can result in social and economic collapse. Given the climatic change in the current world, the movie acts as an allegory to show the devastating effects of the climatic change. The icebergs are already melting, and the sea level is rising. Although the rise in sea level is at a low rate, the chances are high that it will cause significant future damage. Therefore, to avoid a situation similar to that outlined in the movies, action needs to be taken to lower the factors contributing to climatic change.
Diamond also outlines human environmental impact as a cause of the economic and social collapse. This factor can be related to the WaterWorld by the rising sea levels. The sea level has risen to cover the continents due to human activities that cause global warming. Among such activities are deforestation and air pollution. Air pollution has been one of the human activities in the current world that could have major environmental impacts. If these activities are not controlled, they would have a major impact on the environment, thus increasing the levels of global warming. An increase in climatic change could rise sea level, thus collapsing social and economic activities in the affected areas (Diamond). The people in the movie have to rely on the Mariner to bring the dirt. They are concerned about where he has been getting the ground because they have already destroyed the world that provided them with such substances. Hence, human-environmental activities could easily collapse an economy or all the activities in the world as a whole.
Political, social, and religious factors can also play a major role in the collapse of a world. WaterWorld presents a world where survivors strive to survive on limited resources.
