Gentrification has been a common trend recently, and some people do not understand what it entails. It refers to a process where a poor urban region is transformed when wealthy people move to that region, attracting new businesses and improving housing while displacing the current process. Researches show that gentrification causes displacement of unfortunate residents who cannot afford the rising standards of living and high cost of housing. The issue also causes cultural and social exclusion because the population tends to shift to the rich and more privileged individuals. These surging costs are associated with increased fear, stress, lack of sleep, and anxiety for the affected residents. Alternatively, gentrification affects long-term and marginalized neighborhoods. For instance, the more privileged group moving to less developed areas means the less fortunate will be displaced and marginalized. It also adversely affects urban children by changing the dynamics of housing stock and their neighborhoods. Hence, it is clear that gentrification is an adverse phenomenon in poor neighborhoods.
Over the years, some groups support gentrification, highlighting that it will correct the economic gap between the rich and the poor people, while others highlight that it would likely continue in the exploitation of poor people since the rich people will compete for the limited facilities with the low-income earners. However, since these groups only view one side of the topic, it could be critical to analyze both sides to explain how gentrification will affect the people, creating measures to help the rich and the poor. If people continue believing that gentrification only has a negative impact, they will likely not implement it. On the other hand, those who believe it only has a positive impact will implement it without taking precautions, risking failure. Even though gentrification will improve the region's welfare by reducing the inequalities experienced in these areas, it will likely increase competition among low-income earners, which could shift them to other areas, exposing them to more suffering.
Gentrification can upset the role of social connection by causing destabilizing community inhabitants. Stability in an area is essential to forming community connections. Consequently, housing cost insecurity resulting from this phenomenon can contribute to stress directly or indirectly, including high housing costs like mortgage and utility bills. These insecurities can force the resident to overlook their health requirements, including searching for quality food. The excellent news about gentrification is that it only sometimes causes more departures from neighborhoods (Cortright). One reason is that this phenomenon represents a crucial investment for the neighborhood. Residents in the neighborhood tend to embrace the revival and less invested regions. Also, gentrification does not necessarily worsen a neighborhood economically (Cortright). It facilitates improved housing by embracing housing enhancement across the gentrified community. Besides, it surges the property values leading to property owners obtaining high income from investing in real estate, w...
