Research Paper Instructions:

To end this semester, you will be doing some research on a topic of your choosing related to creative writing and write a short paper on your findings. This can tackle a variety of topics related to writing. For example:
It can be a very general topic:
Why do we read?
Why do we write?
What are the most important aspects of the writing process?
Or it can be a very specific topic:
What is the current state of the “mystery novel” as a genre in modern American literature?
How have scientific discoveries been used as focal points for novels throughout history?
Is there a clear line between how one writes fiction versus nonfiction?
Or it can be somewhere in-between those two extremes.
The most important part is - whatever topic you choose, make sure you have a unique stance or opinion concerning it. It can be based on a combination of your research and your own observations, but this is important because this is what forms your thesis. For example, if you were to choose the topic “What are the most important aspects of the writing process?” as stated in my example above, I wouldn’t want you to just reiterate what I already told you in class. The purpose of this assignment is to get you to form your own thoughts about the writing process or topics which concern writing in general.
As we are delving into grammatical “point of view” and perspective in this unit, keep in mind that a research paper is also something written from a particular point of view and perspective. When you are writing a research paper, you are in the position of an academic who is using evidence to convince the reader of something. Thinking about it this way, in writing the paper you are putting on the persona of an academic, and thus trying to put yourself into their shoes and think in the way an academic thinks. Academics value objective language, for example, proper grammar, evidence-based reasoning, formal structure, a well-defined thesis, etc.

Why Do We Write
Academic and professional writing is a never-ending process that involves a sequence of structured steps. For many writers and students, writing is an easy task, and for others, it is quite tricky since they do not know the basics of writing, and this problem is common among inexperienced writers and high school students. They struggle while writing every single sentence and often end up getting bad results or poor marks. According to Tyler Greenway, more than 50 percent of American students think that writing is a single-short effort in which a document can be drafted in one sitting (Greenway 112). However, there is nothing like this; writing is an ongoing process that requires a great amount of time, dedication and full concentration.
Prewriting
All of the students must be familiar with the fact that taking a notebook or a blank page to write something is the very first step. This is what is called the Prewriting step. Prewriting can be further subdivided into outlining, storyboarding, diagramming, mind-mapping and clustering, depending on the nature of one’s topic as well as the deadline of the essay. It helps identify how the content should be structured and begins with audience awareness and motivation. For example, if a writer is not aware of who is his target audience or client, it may not be possible for him to come up with a quality essay. Another important thing to bear in mind is that the student or writer should communicate with the target audience or person carefully, and for this purpose, the selection of the right kind of words, phrases, and sentences is always required.
Find a Suitable Idea or Topic
Ideas are all around a writer or student. A person can draw inspiration from his daily routine, everyday situations and things around him. For example, if you are a student who has been asked to write something on college life, then you can get inspiration from your environment, the students around you and the day-to-day activities. There are times when students do not understand how to choose a good topic; however, if you are capable of digging deeper and observing things and people around you, then you will not have any problem in finding a suitable topic to write about. According to A. Peterkin, the writing process cannot be started if the topic remains unknown as the student will never get to know what he is going to write and how to structure the content, as well as how to divide it into different sections. Thus, calling writing an easy task or a single-shot effort is totally wrong (Peterkin 1650). Ideas of a good topic can come from one’s textbooks too. The more a student devotes himself to the studies, the higher are his chances of becoming creative-minded and achieving success. Another way to get a good topic is to consult the teacher; one can pitch some ideas to the teacher and wait for their approval. Once the topic has been finalized, the next step is to prepare an outline.
