ntroduction
This semester’s readings focus on technology—highlighting the concerns and hopes, attitudes and expectations that people have in the face of new technologies. This assignment asks you to identify a relevant theme about our attitudes toward technology and to trace it through several of our class readings. Identifying and grouping authors who join in a specific conversation about technology and its impact will prepare you to make your own contribution to that debate. This assignment will help you begin to focus on a specific conversation about technology, which you will develop more fully and respond to in subsequent assignments.
First Task: Choosing a Thematic Focus and Locating Authors
The conversations revolving around technology involve many issues. To be able to compose your own essay contributing to the conversation (our final assignment), you will need to focus on one of these issues and what our class authors have to say about it. You start to do this by noticing and following themes and issues which link several authors together. For this assignment, choose a theme about technology which shows up in several class readings and which interests you. Your annotated bibliography will be organized around this issue and will include those class readings which address it. For instance, you might focus on the idea that technology is a tool and on the authors who espouse that idea.
Second Task: Writing Theme Overview
Write a paragraph which identifies and describes the theme/focus of your annotated bibliography.
Third Task: Writing Annotation Entries
An annotated bibliography is an alphabetized list of sources relevant to a particular area of inquiry (theme): each entry includes both bibliographic information and a descriptive summary of the source (the annotation).
Once you have chosen which theme/issue you would like to focus on, you will write annotations for 6 class readings that address that theme in some fashion. Create an entry for each source which includes:
MLA citation
Summary of the source. Describe the author’s argument, including the author’s main claim and relevant reasons, evidence.
Description of how the source addresses/incorporates the theme and how it connects to other authors around this theme or issue.

Technology and community
Overview:
Technologies appear, advance, and at times become outdated very quickly in modern society today. A pure technological invention designed for one purpose is sometimes modified to fulfil a range of various purposes. The goals may be educational and significant to the community. For example, a simple status updating software of Twitter has become a learning tool used by an estimated three million people. Therefore, Twitter has become a valuable learning tool for many individuals in the global community, and it is also a means of connecting. Technology can be a great tool to impact community building positively. Social media technology also improves the learning process in the community since individuals can join and participate in the city on a matter that is important to them. The review of the following articles seeks to understand technology-assisted learning through the online communities and the relationship with social networking technologies.
Antennas-Conforti, Enza. "Microblogging on Twitter: Social networking in intermediate Italian classes." The next generation: Social networking and online collaboration in foreign language learning 59 (2009): 90.
This was the only research-based journal article identified in July 2009 in which the use of Twitter as a language learning tool. The students involved were studying Italian at a university in the United States of America and using Twitter was a requirement for grading component of their coursework. The writer identified with interaction theories in second language acquisition and an information processing review related to reading of tweets to inputs that are integrated into the learner’s linguistic system then the output is posted as tweets on the platform. As a result, the research is not presented regarding situated learning and language learner participation in a community of practice. The author concludes how the use of Twitter leads to the development of community among the students and other individuals who took part in the research and how classroom interactions are affected by the use of Twitter. The participants were positive about the effects of using Twitter on their confidence as users of language and the development of writing skills. However, reading tweets was not helpful in reading skills.
Barab, Sasha A., and Thomas Duffy. "From practice fields to communities of practice." Theoretical foundations of learning environments 1.1 (2000): 25-55.
The authors in the article discuss what is considered as an essential shift from learning designed for collaborative classroom practice to learning designed to connect the students with the society through legitimate peripheral participation in community practice. According to authors, the practice fields do not allow for negotiation of an individual as a member of the community. The learner can quickly develop an identity that is bound to the culture of the classroom, and the learning motivations are connected to exchange value and not a goal of being a full practitioner. The authors come up with three important distinctions between situated approaches to learning. The authors provide examples of several best practice models of learning p...
