Research Paper Instructions:

This assignment asks you to follow up on key ideas and concerns that we have addressed in the class and sustain an original argument about one of them, using the academic research process to enrich and strengthen your argument. There are three basic requirements for this paper: 1) It must make an argument about a topic concerning comedy (whether on stage, in film, TV, the web, etc.) using a primary text; 2) It must draw from at least four separate sources (these can be both scholarly and popular – what matters most is the way you use them in your argument); and 3) It must include a works cited page in MLA style. While your specific texts (primary and secondary) for the Research Paper are up to you, you must write within one of the three provided umbrella topics:
• The empowerment or disenfranchisement of particular social groups through the use of comedy, including race, class, and/or gender
o Consider comics who take on race, class, gender, sexuality explicitly in their work and examine how they engage those topics and to what end.
• The rhetorical value of irony
o Consider comics like Stephen Colbert or Sarah Silverman who employ irony as their primary method of advancing an argument – what are they able to accomplish through those ends and are there limits?
• Rhetorical transgression
o Consider comics who “go too far.” What can an examination of how a particular comic has gone too far help us understand about our culture and society? What’s the difference between Tig Notaro and Dave Chappelle?
As our discussions will emphasize, a research paper is not written by finding articles that simply back up your own ideas. Rather, a strong research paper requires you to read through various articles, essays, etc., identify trends, brainstorm your own thoughts about those trends, then construct an argument of your own regarding them, using the research you found in order to illustrate your argument.

Racial and ethnic inequities that exist today are a result of structural, institutional, and systemic racism. Systemic and systematic racism takes different forms where it is deep-seated in the laws and regulations that guide an organization or society (Tourse et al. 23). Institutional racism can manifest unconsciously. Sometimes, people who express subtle racism are not even aware of their actions. For example, the presidential election of 2020 had African Americans waiting in line 23 minutes before they could vote. It is in comparison to their white counterparts who waited in line for only 12 minutes. (Banales et al. 176). Anyone can be a victim of racism depending on the contexts, from prejudice, discrimination, and hate to violence, intimidation against another individual based on race. To combat racism, people employ different ways such as self-validation, peaceful protests, sensitization, and enforcing the rule of law on racists. This study explores some of the subtle ideas presented in the famous comedy show, including Chris Rock and the Kid. Chris Rock explores the themes of divorce, marriage, and politics, and racism (Verne 1). Rock can pierce the listener's sensibilities while invoking laughter among the audience. He wonders out loud if racist police officers ought to "shoot a white kid once in a while" to balance the statistics because black kids are victimized and subjected to police brutality. He also speaks on raising black children in preparation for a "white world." Throughout the show, he shares rough wisdom on material about being a black American.
Comedy is a genre of art that is meant to induce laughter. It can be through films, movies, skits, and stand-up comedy. When people watch or listen to comedy, it's because they want to relax and "blow off some steam." Using this medium to speak about racism without sounding too severe and heavy seems impossible at first glance. Rock's comedic approach to re-opening the idea of systemic racism in a comedic approach helps increase awareness in his audience without making everyone tense or apprehensive of the issues at hand. It seems that Rock's delivery and content help shed more light on systemic racism in America. For example, Rock advocates the misleading idea that the United States is continuously making progress in the fight against racism. He sheds light on a sensitive issue while managing to keep the audience laughing. People can watch and learn about racism and how it affects other people, especially those ignorant of racial discrimination. He uses himself and his past experiences with racism and bigotry as a way to educate the audience.
Typically, a culture mimics the existing states of the political and social affairs of a country. This is more evident, particularly in the hierarchical organization of people based on race, inequality, and prejudice. As seen in Chris Rock, comedic performance and structure enable them to function in unique channels of emotional release. The primary role of the comedian is to educate the audiences.
