Bridging the Differences That Divide Us
Countries like the United States experience much division because of political, social, and economic inequalities. The country's current developments affirm that there are rampant divisions, especially the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. The policy measures enacted through the different regimes in the nation have cemented the divisions, some based on race, income level, and education access. Bridging the division gap requires understanding the major causes of division and developing appropriate policies to solve these divisions. Diversity is an important aspect that allows people to thrive. Therefore, the policies must ensure that different perspectives are considered, and all parties are included in the process. This will ensure that proper remedies against society's gaps are addressed faster and with minimal challenges.
People treat others differently when they do not understand the value of the differences between them. Therefore, the policy measures' focus or any proposed remedies is to transform the perceptions of the people and ensure that they adopt inclusive values. When efforts are made to transform how people perceive each other, either politically or socially, much of the existing gaps will be bridged. These aspects are "supporting of legitimate authorities, common goals and a sense of interdependence, and a sense of having equal status" (Jilani). There are many investigations conducted supporting this perception. There is much that can be achieved if there are proper measures to the incentives for bridging the gaps. In order to support the process of demolishing the barriers, individuals can start by allowing people to "[share] their own stories, and [equip them] with guidelines to help keep the conversations going" (Jilani). This approach will ensure consistency in any approach adopted to enhance inclusivity and embrace diverse views from members of the population.
As Boyd noted, "the United States has always been a diverse but segregated country." Throughout the history of the nation, people have been forced to grapple with diverse perspectives. These differences have centered on political ideologies, views, opinions, and other experiences that have affected the way the country functions. Through the institutions established by the constitution, people are forced to grapple with different aspects. All these perceptions have existed for a long, and are becoming worse each day. Some things can be done to ensure that they are addressed. It is possible to bring America back together from the prevalent "hate-filled rhetoric and deep ideological divisions" (Suttie). While the division has been growing, many people still believe that the answer comes from a particular side of the divide, winning. This is a wrong understanding of the problem and cannot solve the issue.
In order to bridge the gaps, there is a need to revaluate the approach of the p...
