NUTRITION DURING PREGNANCY AND THE RISK OF CHRONIC DISEASE
Fetal development largely depends on the proper supply of nutrients. There are various nutrients and minerals associated with fetal development, such as folic acid, which plays a critical role in developing the nervous system. Intake of foods with calcium is essential as it helps develop the fetus's heart and bones. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium. Malformation in the fetus is often down to malnourished mothers. According to the world health organization, approximately 24% of babies in the world are born with lower than optimal weights due to lack of proper nutrition (WHO). Overweight cases are also caused by malnutrition.
Maternal nutrition impacts the child’s health and links with chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, insulin-related disorders, and hypertension. The deficiency of nutrients and minerals during critical stages in development has been associated with adverse health complications.
