Introduction
Any organization must have a vision statement, mission statement, and philosophy. The organization must state these concepts clearly and effectively to everyone. These statements are beneficial not only to the organization but also to the people who are part of the organization. In addition, these statements contribute to the formation of an organization’s identity. Members of an organization, for example, who are guided by their vision, mission statement, and philosophy, will determine the organization’s purpose, and they will be motivated to contribute to achieving the shared goal. Also, these statements support the formation of one’s identity. For instance, people who work without direction may feel that their actions are pointless and that all their efforts are futile. People who work with leadership, those who are guided by an organization’s statements and principles, are more likely to feel like they have a purpose in life, that they matter in the organization, and that their efforts are recognized and needed. Hence, an organization requires a vision, mission, and philosophy. These principles guide the organization and its members.
Review of Literature
An organization’s mission and values are a message (Rothwell et al., 19). It directs members of an organization on what to do and what to strive for. As Covey says, one should start with the end in mind. The organization must first define what it wants to achieve and what it wants its members to do. The entire organization is more likely to succeed if these guiding principles are followed. Therefore, the vision and mission statements inform the organization and its members of what needs to be done or accomplished.
