Engineering major is an interdisciplinary study of mathematical and scientific principles to solve technical problems like designing and building machines, structures, roads, bridges, and vehicles depending on one’s specification(Follman, US News 1). Studies show that students who study general engineering take various courses in mathematics, natural science, and humanities and social sciences (Yoon70). To major in engineering, students need excellent math and science skills. This study aims to identify the factors that influence undergraduate students to pursue an academic major in engineering.
In a study to evaluate decisions made by engineering students to major in engineering, Carnasciali et al. found that many social and cultural factors such as demographics, self-identified competence, self-assessment, stereotypes, and socialization (parents, peers, and faculty) influence a student’s choice of engineering major(3). These entail personal beliefs, individual interest, perceived barriers to success, and attainment values. In a similar study, Lichtensteinreported that some students pursue an engineering course due to exposure to various engineering activities and jobs(227).
Sovansophal and Shimizucategorized students’ contributing factors into three perspectives: academic achievement, psychological viewpoint, and behavioral standpoint(71). From an academic achievement angle, Sovansophal and Shimizuasserted that strong pre-college academic achievement in science and mathematics motivates students to pursue engineeringmajors (71). From a psychological view, Painter et al. supported Sovansophal and Shimizu’s standpoint that self-efficiency beliefs in mathematics and science positively influence a student’s choice of engineering major(71). From a behaviorist position, the researchers indicated that students with high self-rating in the attitude measures are highly likely to major in engineering(Sovansophal and Shimizu 71). The components of the measures include perception of a science teacher, anxiety towards science, self-esteem at science, and enjoyment of science. An engineering career needs proficiency in science and mathematics that helps individuals deal with technical problems in their occupation.
Job Description and Requirements
Engineers apply scientific and mathematical principles to analyze and solve mechanical, structural, and systematic problems in safe, practical and cost-effective ways. To be successful as an engineer, one should have an firm understanding of science and mathematics, a deep economic, social and cultural awareness, and an enthusiastic fondness for team work. Competent students display an ability to comprehend complex systems, identify causes of problem, and deasign measures to address the problems. Engineering positions typically require a bachelor’s degree in engineering or relevamnt field. Some engineering jobs, specifically in management need a master’s degree.
