Documentation Pyramid
ISO 9001 documentation system is a quality system structured in a pyramid shape, representing the hierarchy of documentation levels or tiers (ISO9000resources 2015). Usually, there are three to four levels of documentation of the policies, procedures, and manuals reflecting the day-to-day activities of a business organization. The levels of documentation comprise the information that make up the quality management manual emphasized by the ISO 9002 to increase effectiveness in organizations.
At the top level of the pyramid, the tier 1contains the states policies and business objectives that outline the commitment towards quality of products or services of an organization (Jackson 1997, 112). In essence, the level 1 presents the quality manual that provides the framework for quality system. This level of documentation is important for any organization as it demonstrates the commitment towards adhering to the firm’s quality policy. It outlines how individuals within an organization should implement an effective quality system that meets the standards of ISO 9001 (ISO9000resources 2015). It comprises of organizational control and quality assurance policies.
The tier 2 or level 2 represents the operation procedure that pertains to how an organization is managed in relation to making the control of the organization system effective (Schlickman 2003, 36). It comprises of work instructions, operational procedures, quality procedures and the appropriate responsibilities for effective the process control within an organization. In developing the procedures of an organization, it is important to review and analyze the current practice in order to come up with the desired procedures, which should then be released for reviews after which the recommendations should be used to revise the procedures to obtain the most desires ones for implementat...
