American Colonial to Post-Modern Architecture
The American architecture has been undergoing a tremendous change from the colonial settlements to the postmodernism. These architectural buildings are usually influenced by the context, history, culture, social and regional factors. The building’s unique styles are designed to portray themes and period of construction coupled with compositional aspects that define its place and period. Therefore, the essay herein presents different architectural buildings revealing their names, locations, date of construction, the architect and their defining features that represent styles.
1 Georgian Revival Style of 1920s
The above picture is an illustration of a colonial building with a context of architecture and engineering. It is based a symmetrical and rectangular in shape; its windows are narrow sided which flank the front doors and have paired chimneys. The roof is gabled and hipped with multiple dormers. The theme of the architectural building is American Colonial Revival that existed between 1895 and 1960. Also, it reveals a commercial style due to the context of commercial development. Thus, the style is a Georgian that emphasized on symmetry and classical detailing with two story building. It has a decorative pillar with multiple light windows. 2 Federal Revival Style of 1930s
The picture illustrates a Federal Revival sub-theme based on an American colonial revival. Its context is architecture and engineering that emphasize on order, symmetrical façade with a centrally located main entrance with entablature with repetitive multi-light windows. Furthermore, it exhibits horizontal wood siding with brick materials. The period of significance is 1910 to 1940s with an essential characteristic of two story-building in height, has a rectangular form with a gabled or hipped roof with multiple roof dormer and double chimney. On the same note, the exterior features include brick cladding with a projected pavilion raised by pillars or columns.
