The rapid advancement of technology has undoubtedly affected positively and negatively all aspects of life. It resulted to increase work performance, faster communication, and modern ways of dealing with things in education, healthcare, military, etc. This can be seen in the rise of the internet, various social media platforms, and different mobile devices. The medical field is one important aspect that is heavily affected by the rapidly evolving technology. Various healthcare organizations are anxious in accepting these changes along with its implications. This paper aims to demonstrate how information technology addresses the nursing shortage in the healthcare field.
The current state of the healthcare field is marked by the increasing difficulties in staffing and rigorous paperwork. The nursing shortage has been estimated to continually increase. It was predicted that this shortage will reach up to 500,000 by 2020. The increasing number of old and sick patients, as well as the increasing complexity of care, requires greater demand for nurses. However, the supply of nurses is diminishing due to the aging nurse population. To mitigate the shortage of nurses, health organizations found various solutions and strategies to improve the efficiency of nurses, which includes the technology systems (Hessels et al., 2015).
Technology has been beneficial to nurses. Several technologies have been utilized in key areas of nursing such as in scheduling, patient education, mobile communication, administration of medicines, clinical decision support, automated documentation, computerized physician order, and computerized patient record. As part of the technological initiative, hospitals and health organizations must ensure to address any financial and technical issues that could arise during the implementation (Matthew-Maich et al., 2016).
Several health organizations embraced technologies not only for the improvement of intervention and outcomes but also to support healthcare professionals. The American Organization of Nurse Executives or AONE is an organization that serves as a leading voice for nursing leadership. This organization is a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association or AHA. Committed to supporting a healthful practice, the Nursing Organizations Alliance’s Principles and Elements of a Healthful Practice/Work Environment is promoted by AONE and integrate this into the organization’s leadership competencies. To address the nursing workforce issue, AONE joined forces with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing or AACN to develop a modern strategy in aligning practice and the academe. This partnership aims to advance innovative solutions in handling the demands of the healthcare system. Moreover, this organization recommended the use of technology in enhancing the reduced capacity of the nursing workforce and develop solutions enabling the aging workforce to be still active in terms of direct-care roles (AONL, 2020).
