Comparison of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Procedural Programming
Event-Driven Programming (EDP), Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), and Procedural Programming (PP) are all types of computer programming, and they differ in features and functionality. OOP is centred on viewing programs as objects, which contain data and methods or procedures. One of its features is the ability to change or modify the objects and data fields. Most languages in OOP such as Java, PHP, and C++ are class-based (Elrad, Filman, & Bader, 2001). It means that the programmer views the virtual objects as examples of classes. On the other hand, PP finds its derivation from structured and functional programming paradigms, which follows a series of stages or steps. Subsequently, in EDP, the program depends on the actions executed, for instance, sensor outputs and mouse clicks, and is accessible in a graphic user interface (Bruce, Danyluk, & Murtagh, 2001). The following paper will evaluate the three programming paradigms and conduct a comparison on them.
Programmers have the choice to use either OOP or PP; however, a majority prefers the first option. One of the primary advantages that is possessed by OOP is abstract layers, which are not present in procedural programming. In procedural programming, one has to add them manually (Elrad, Filman, & Bader, 2001). In OOP, once a programmer forms a class, the presence of abstract layers are automatically generated. Consequently, a programmer can decide if they want the abstract layers to deduct or add value. Another great advantage that OOP has over PP is the reduction in lines of code within a project (White & Sivitanides, 2005). In procedural programming, the data keeps track and is aware of every single line of code. It is bound to be hectic if the project is large and there are many programmers involved. The chances of them remembering all their variables are limited. Hence, there is a higher risk of them crashing the program. In OOP, the program allows the developer to hide data, thus reducing the lines of code by an enormous amount through a process known as encapsulation. Regardless of the size of the project and number of variables added, there is less coding by the programmer or developer.
As mentioned earlier in the paper, object-oriented programming is class-based and deals with the concept of objects. The paper will focus on one example to illustrate how a class function together with its attributes and methods. The case in question is Marlie, a 24-year old student.
