Introduction
Domestic violence is an offensive behavior that occurs within families where the less privileged ones are put under control of the other, and results in distress. It embraces a range of abuses, for example, verbal, emotional, physical and sexual assaults. Aspects such as isolation of one from family and friends, destruction of property, psychological abuse and financial abuse are also included (NCADV.org, 2016). Studies have revealed that women and children are more vulnerable to domestic violence than men. It is essential to note that also women commit these offenses although their occurrences are less common than that of men. Additionally, the domestic violence occurs in all socio-demographic groups, religions, and cultures. Ground on the consequences of this problem to the society, a number of theories have been formulated to help fix the situation. One of them is the feminist theory, which is commonly defined as a measure to end oppression, sexism and sexist exploitation. Henceforth, the study focuses on the effects of domestic violence on children and how the theory can help in alleviating this problem.
Literature review
Feminist Theory
Those who believe that feminist theory focuses solely on women and girls, and its fundamental goal is stimulating the preeminence of womenfolk over men are wide of the mark. The model is about viewing the social world in a manner that boosts the forces that enhance justice and equality by fighting or diminishing oppression, inequality, and injustice (In, 2014). Throughout the past the feminist theory was perceived as women associate model; however, today it has been advanced to accommodate all genders. Through shifting its focus in society away from females’ experiences and perspectives, the concept has fashioned more creative and inclusive social models. Part of what makes the theory inclusive and creative is that it over and over again considers how systems of oppression and power interact (Mills, & Mullany, 2011). In other words, it does not only focus on gender, oppression, and power, but it also cooperates with systemic sexuality, racism, disability, nationality, among other aspects. Henceforth, the feminist theory is reflected as a notion that women and men should be equal socially, politically and economically (O'Reilly, 2016). And that is what is termed as the ‘core feminism.’ It is also defined as a measure to end oppression, sexism and sexist exploitation.
History
Even though the terms feminist and feminism did not gain widespread use up until the late mid twenty century, they were already in use prior to the time. For example, in the 1942 flick ‘women of the year,’ K. Hepburn speaks about the feminist movement (O'Reilly, 2016). Hence, revealing that the concept of feminism movement began much earlier. The movement's history is divided into three waves by scholars and feminists. The first wave denotes the females’ suffrage drive during the 19th and beginning of the 20th century focused mainly on the enhancement of equal contract and property right (Liu et al., 2013). For instance, it advocated for the women to be allowed to vote. The second wave was dedicated towards issues of gender equality, for example, lessening discrimination. The third wave focused on the achievement and failures of the second wave. It began earlier 1990s (Liu et al., 2013). It led to the definition of feminism theory as a measure to end oppression, sexism and sexist exploitation. Henceforth, feminist beliefs are not static notions, but they have evolved with time and have been shaped by various individuals in all stages.
Branches of Feminism
Cultural Feminism: refers to the feminist perception that there are fundamental behavioral differences between ladies and menfolk and that, ladies’ differences are exceptional and should be acknowledged (In, 2014). The model supports the scientific knowledge that there are variances between females and menfolk. The philosophy is based on the concept that the society will be much better if feminist behaviors were realized and encouraged. The practices embrace the act of being cooperative, kind and nurturing. These aspects can lower incidents of domestic violence and bullying in the community: thus, alleviating the children side effects of domestic violence.
Ecofeminism: According to ecofeminism theory, patriarchal beliefs are detrimental to women, children and the environment (Liu et al., 2013). Other than abuse of women and children, the model raises the issue of environment conservation. It also points to men’s desire to dominate the society where men feel as if they have to conquer women, children, and wilderness so as to have complete power (Mills, & Mullany, 2011). As per ecofeminism it is this desire that leads to domestic violence, abuse of children and environmental destruction. Thus, overcoming the desire will give all the community members; men and women, an opportunity to rule and take part in the conservation of the environment.
Socialist Feminism: is a theory that advocates for the alleviation of capitalism via the collective reformation of the economy (Mills, & Mullany, 2011). According to the model, it is capitalism that supports or enhances patriarchal beliefs in our society (O'Reilly, 2016). This concept is based on the perception that presently men owns more property and power than women; hence, when it comes to sharing there is a high probability that men will share these wits with other men (In, 2014). The theory is good in that it draws attention to economics and politics and focuses on how equality would be reached.
Radical Feminism: is ground on the belief that sexism is deeply rooted in our culture and the only remedy is abolishing the notion of gender completely (Hannam, 2014). Radical feminism endeavors to distinguish between culturally and biologically determined behaviors so as to free both women and men the previous gender roles. However, it views women persecution as the most radical oppression form. Additionally, the model questions why some roles are based on gender. Radical feminism has two perceptions which are radical-Libertarian and radical-cultural feminism. As per radical-Libertarian feminism reproduction and femininity limit ladies’ ability to contribute maximally to the society (In, 2014). The concept appears to be backing birth control and abortion so that women devote less time to pregnancy and more time to work. Radical-cultural feminism brings the view that women should celebrate their femininity since its better than masculinity. As per the theory ladies ought to acknowledge the natural rights; thus, the society should refrain from using technology to control reproduction.
Liberal Feminism: According to liberal feminism all of us were created equal; henceforth, deserve equal privileges (O'Reilly, 2016). In other words, before God, we are all equal and have the same civil liberties. Based on the theory we learn it is the manner in which men and women are socializing that causes oppression (Liu et al., 2013). It is the socializing style which brings patriarch beliefs; thus, keeping menfolk in control over the females. Liberal activists believe men and women have same mental capacity; hence, women should be given equal opportunities in the community like their male counterparts (Mills, & Mullany, 2011).
