Questions for the Assignment: Using Sociology of Work & Organization concepts and theories, readings and lectures answer the following questions, then create at least one solid paragraph to answer each. Use examples.
1. What is the organization? What does it produce? (a service, information, a product, products, etc.). What is its history and strategy? Is it a publicly or privately owned entity? (Check organization website).
2. A culture is learned, shared, and patterned behavior that gives meaning and order to people’s lives. Sociologists think of culture as a society’s ‘personality.’ How would you describe the organizational culture of your field research site? For example, think about the differences in culture of working at IBM compared to Apple.
3. Using Max Weber’s definition of legal-rational authority as a point of departure, describe and analyze the hierarchies of authority and division of labor within the organization. Do other kinds of authority operate in the organization? (traditional, charismatic). Explain.
4. What strategies of management of labor are used by the organization? Scientific management (Taylor)? Human Relations (Mayo)? Humanistic (Maslow)? In what ways does management attempt to increase worker productivity? Have efforts been made to reform work, e.g., work conditions, training, workshops, teamwork, etc.).
5. Discuss your presentation of self (Goffman) and management of emotion as an organizational goal (Hochschild). . Revisit the Ginsberg article. Describe the ‘emotional regulation’ of your immediate supervisor, especially when delivering good/bad news. If you are supervisor yourself, analyze and compare your own strategies. (Change names, when using any examples).
6. How is innovation introduced and managed?
7. What kinds of technology are critical to the organization’s bureaucratic workings?
8. How does communication flow? Discuss tall and flat structure aspects of communication.
9. Analysis of Six Structural Profiles (Ch 6, Pugh): Using the chart on page 69 of your Handel textbook, describe the structure of the organization by answering the questions that are relevant for understanding your organization. Not all may apply. Explain why a particular structural profile does not apply.
10. Using Ch 18, do a resource dependence analysis of organizational behavior to understand the external environmental (rather than internal) constraints on the organization. To operate, from which external environments must it draw resources (e.g., labor force, physical inputs, customers or clients, information, investment or funding, legal permissions, or normative legitimacy)?
11. Use the cncept of isomorphism (Ch 19) to analyze the impact of the external environment on the organization from an institutional social systems perspective. How do the state, societal norms, traditions, conventions, and imitation shape organizational practice, independent of rational bureaucratic efficiency considerations?
12. Describe and analyze any post-bureaucratic aspects to the organization, e.g., network forms of organization (Ch 25) eCommerce, sharing economy.
13. How does the organization fit within the larger social structure of society in terms of gender, sexuality, race, age, and class?
14. Finally, is the organization a good place to work? Using what you have learned in this course, write a summary statement about why or why not.

El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center is the organization I have picked to answer the Sociology of Work & Organization question. El Sol is a non-profit organization based in San Bernardino's Westside neighborhood that was founded in 1991. Their mission is to equip their community with the resources they need to live healthy and comfortable lives, including access to health care, safe, affordable housing, educational opportunities, and leadership skills to eliminate disparities. El Sol's goal in achieving this mission is to provide culturally and linguistically competent services that promote and maintain community well-being.
A culture is learned, shared, and patterned behavior that gives meaning and order to people’s lives. Sociologists think of culture as a society’s ‘personality.’ How would you describe the organizational culture of your field research site?
Organizational structure is influenced by the design and implementation of organizational culture. Organizational structure is influenced by culture, which shapes top-level management's perception of the organizational structure model. Organizational culture offers a frame of reference through which organizational management's ideas and reasoning circulate during the decision-making process on the corporate structure model. The organizational structure, from a managerial standpoint, is a tool that managers use to fulfill their organization's goals (Anning-Dorson, 2021). For the majority of individuals in a company, as well as for management, culture shapes interpretation systems. As a result, what an organization means, what its objective is, and how it should be constructed are all culturally established. When it comes to the purposeful and planned shaping and formal sanctioning of a company's leadership, its organizational culture will have a significant influence.
Using Max Weber’s definition of legal-rational authority as a point of departure, describe and analyze the hierarchies of authority and division of labor within the organization. Do other kinds of authority operate in the organization? (traditional, charismatic). Explain.
Legal-rational authority means that power is placed in a system of rules and rule-bound institutions, and that those in charge of enforcing and altering the rules have no influence over the process. This does not, however, imply that the power is democratic. Monarchs and even authoritarian authorities who accept a system of external laws use legal-rational authority (Rust, 2021).
With the help of the County of San Bernardino Department of Behavioral Health, El Sol has developed a Promotores de Salud Mental (Mental Health Promoter) curriculum and training program. El S...
