Choose an interesting quote from one of the unit readings in the first few weeks. Type up that quote and provide a proper academic reference (in text or footnote). Explain what that quote means and why it is interesting to you in your own words
" Is my greatest contribution to move over and get out of the way" (Alcoff, 1991) the quote is interesting to me since it shows how women are constantly discriminated against even when trying to fight against the discrimination. The quotes bring into light the problem and the difficulties encountered when trying to voice the oppression of others. The writer shows how discrimination against others is only taken into consideration when it does not deter the agenda of others (Alcoff, 1991). For instance, the writer talks about how the United States speak about the problems of the third world country, but the matter is only solved when the resolution does not stop the action of key players.
I look at the quote and think of how women over time have been oppressed, and every time one tries to speak about oppression, the matter is taken lightly or dismissed. For instance, the writer shows how the concept of intersectionality came into existence (Alcoff, 1991). The black women were complaining about not getting the same job as their white female counterparts were dismissed and told to bring the issue of race or gender when voicing their grievances. Moreover, black men were given assignments that the female could have handled, but this was dismissed. Every time a female is oppressed, they are expected to sulk it up and continue with life as nothing happened, move over, and take the oppression in silence (Young, 1980).
Black women have shown their capability to do some functions and work with the same if not greater efficiency than the white women, but they are still overlooked (Crenshaw, 2017). They are still pleading for inclusion and being accorded the same respect and treatment, and being given a chance to express themselves without being discriminated against. However, they are still asked to get out of the way.
Making links to at least one readings from the unit so far, write a short reflection on the way your social ‘location’ has shaped your experience of any of the following: gender, university or feminism
My social identity has contributed a lot to my experience as a university student as a female. Having been aware of how I am expected to act on campus, a notion that I disagree with has changed my experience and the outcome of the school. Being aware that I can make decisions independently and not be coerced to bend the decision to others' accord has enabled me to live a fulfilling life.
Moreover, the understanding that I am a female and am significantly disadvantaged with the opportunities compared to my male counterparts has helped me work extra hard to gain recognition and acceptance at my level (Alcoff, 1991). As Das puts it, a female is significantly disadvantaged and expected to follow what the dominant gender is d...
