Presently, Al Qaeda poses as a weaker terrorist group than it was at the beginning of the global war against terrorism in the year 2001. Several of the terrorist group’s operational bases, as well as training camps in Afghanistan, have been dispossessed. This has been as a result of the disrupted command-and-control abilities of the group. Consequently, its headquarters has been damaged, causing its leadership and follower, precisely fighters to be forcibly dispersed (Bockstette, 2010).
Presently their leaders and fighters are consumed ensuring their security more than by planning and executing attacks. Not only communication but also coordination among the different parts of the group’s global network has become more and more inconvenient. The leadership has equally become less ineffective than it was in the past years. These leadership and coordination setbacks have forced the group to change its targeting patter. Al Qaeda’s operatives must now depend on other local groups to not only implement their plans. Further, they have shifted their focus to other weaker and more accessible targets such as Kenya, Kuwait, Pakistan among others (Bergen, 2002).
Leadership is among the most necessary trait an individual needs to succeed. These skills determine not only success but also the variations between a poor, good and a great leader. As described above, Osama Bin Laden was indisputably a great leader. He is famous all over the world since his excellent leadership skills. However, for wrong reasons, Bin Laden managed to deliver chaos in many parts of the country through his leadership. Besides, he managed to control a vast network of terrorists. Unlike Zawahiri, Bin Laden managed to control his followers and operatives to the point that they were willing to sacrifice they live to make others suffer (Bockstette, 2010).
Contrary to Zawahiri, Osama had not only a clear but also a consistent vision which was to attack America. Zawahiri, on the other hand, has explored other softer targets without consistency. This makes him more of a leader lacking vision. Osama maintained his view on America as an immoral nation. He also viewed U.S.A as a nation filled with homosexuality and alcohol.
Consequently, he held the belief that the nation had an unacceptable relationship with Israel. Bin Laden was a charismatic leader. Unlike Zawahiri, Osama managed to manifest his revolutionary power. To date, his following is still huge and tries to hold up under predecessor, Zawahiri. It is lack of charisma in Zawahiri that is failing the group today. Zawahiri is mainly involved in sheer behavioral change.
On the other hand, Bin Laden was involved in the transformation of both the values and beliefs of his followers’ values. This charismatic style of this leadership lacks in Zawahiri. Instead, he is more of a populist leader who influences only attitudes towards particular objects while not ready to transform the basic normative aspects which encompass the particular attitudes (Bockstette, 2010).
