Sports ministry is a way to celebrate and praise God by participating in sports and connecting with people and communities (Lam, 2015). It combines a love of sports with a love of Christ and His Church (Lam, 2015). Those who participate in sporting activities understand that sports are a powerful tool for connecting with others and a platform for sharing God's word. In other words, a sports ministry promotes links between religion and the general population. Sports opens the doors for discussions on many topics and is an excellent way for the church to reach and accommodate the youth. This paper provides an overview and detailed explanation of the programs and activities of the sports ministry. Overview of the Programs and Activities of the Sport Ministry
The vision of the sports ministry is to serve God by playing sports. Its mission is to equip churches to use sports to make disciples of Jesus Christ within the communities. The sports ministry entails any activity and program ranging from simple play to highly organized and competitive sports. They include games and sports, outdoor activities (biking, hiking, camping, and photography), recreational activities (swimming, dancing, and walking), and fitness programs like aerobic exercise, yoga, marathon races, and walking. These programs and activities improve the physical and mental health of the participants. They are a form of regular physical exercise that helps prevent or reduce chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (Bullard et al., 2019). At the same time, they bring the parishioners together.
Additionally, the programs and activities can enrich the social dimension of human life. They foster a more active lifestyle involving other people, allowing parishioners to form friendships based on common interests. Through these activities, individuals can also learn important life values (Spears Jr & Hernandez, 2018). Learning the rules of the game, observing discipline throughout the sessions, and establishing friendship relationships offer the potential for the positive formation of life skills in work, family, and community.
