The number of people using social media has been on the rise over the years, and this has also been linked to rising cases of mental health issues. According to Pan et al. (2021), social media is linked to depressive symptoms among Asians in the United States, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Depression is attributed to racial discrimination, where Asians are blamed for the emergence and spread of the virus, even though this is not true. Social media use exposes users to discrimination. Female social media users are more prone to be depressed when compared to male users. Some unique data from the study by Pan et al. (2021) is that Chinese Asians had fewer instances of getting depressed when compared to other Asians.
Even though Asians are assumed to be one ethnic group while living in the United States, the research suggests differences regarding mental health processes among different Asian ethnicities.
