Discuss the implications of an individual with depression has on a family. How should this be addressed in treatment? In discussing this case, use Carlos’ case to elaborate on your opinion.
Depression is currently one of the major healthcare conditions the world is dealing with. There are other major global health concerns, but having depression as one of them confirms the notion that it does need to be considered a major healthcare problem. Unlike other healthcare conditions, depression is not a one man’s condition. It affects an entire group and if left unchecked, can greatly impact the overall health of a family.
When someone is depressed, the family is considered as one of the places where one can get support, which is crucial in the recovery period. However, as Foss (2016) notes, the only problem with having the family as the prime support giver is that the healthcare services work with an individual and not the entire family. So, it is possible that the family be dragged down into stressful environments. Looking at the case of Carlos, his wife, and his brothers were forced to deal with the new Carlos, and this meant welcoming his tantrums and taking up his workload. Sonia, his wife, explains that Carlos turned into a different person and could not help with the children, the finances, and any chores he normally used to help with (Gorenstein and Comer, 2015).
