Writing Assignment #2: Economic Growth
There are two parts to this assignment. Your answers to both parts should not exceed three pages, double-spacing, APA format.
Part 1: Most economists agree that the three significant sources of economic growth are (i) increased the number of resources (includes physical capital and human resources), (ii) improved technology and (iii) institutions.
I would like you to choose a developing country and identify several problems facing this country. Then I would like you to answer the following questions.
Which of the following policies do you think would be most effective at boosting growth and living standards in the country of your choice over the short run, and long run? Which policies do you think would be the least effective? Please support your arguments with the modern growth theory as detailed in our textbook.
Suggested policies:
Offer tax incentives for investment by the local firms
Offer tax incentives for investment by foreign firms
Give cash payments for good school attendance (improve quality of education)
Crackdown on government corruption
Restrict imports to protect domestic industries
Allow free trade (encourage international trade)
Give away condoms
Stimulate saving
Stimulate research and development

Part 2: Below is a list of policy proposals that have been advanced to help the economies of developing nations (not just the country of your choice in part one.) Briefly explain whether each proposal is consistent with the Solow model, modern growth theory, neither, or both.
Unrestricted international aid to help build a power plant.
Providing aid for a power plant that is dependent on democratic reforms.
Reductions in trade restrictions.
NOTE: This is a written assignment that you must conduct research about the country you choose to work on. Please make sure that you clearly identify the problems that the country is facing. Your writing must not exceed three pages (double-spacing) and you must have at least two sources for your writing. A successful paper requires you to perform research, craft an argument, and cite references to support your statements. This is a class in economics/social science, so I would like you to use an APA formatting style.

Part 1
Nigeria is a West African country that is quite endowed with enormous natural resources particularly oil, which is bound to bring significant returns to the nation. Although one would expect that the country is far much developed as a result of this richness, it is among the ones with the lowest living standards in Africa. The country faces an unprecedented level of corruption from the political bourgeoisie. The political class has used its position to siphon as many financial resources as possible from the public coffers to enrich themselves. Corruption is at the very top of the challenges plaguing the oil-rich country. On the other hand, the country inhabits the most troublesome group of rebels who are accustomed to conflicts (Jalloh, 2013). Armed conflicts have often been the source of prolonged war particularly in the North where the rebels have made their fortitude. Armed conflicts are correlated with natural resource abundance.
In the short-term, there is a need to have a crackdown on government corruption. Corruption is an illness that is derailing the nation’s economic growth. If the president was to initiate strategies that guarantee that this evil practice comes to a halt, much of the revenue gained from oil explorations would be used in supporting other sectors of the country. This assertion leads to the long-term solution, which is to offer incentives for investment by the local firms. The country’s natural resources are one of the highest in figures worldwide. Taking into account the finances derived from the sale of oil only, the country is capable of subsidizing many local firms to an extent that they can compete with the international market. Giving cash payments for good school attendance would be the least effective strategies that can be implemented. It would lead to lazy, non-competent, and unproductive ...
