Sexual Harassment
The aspect of sexual harassment is one that takes on a very subtle approach and in most of the cases, it is not reported despite the many cases that take place in most of the work places. In some of the cases, this is a matter that has been ironically, trivialized and in some others, the element of ignorance plays a major role. As such, it is important to first understand what it actually means before delving into the subject matter. According to the Equality Act of 2010, sexual harassment, can be referred to as any act that is associated with unwanted conduct that is sexual in nature and is directed at violating or affecting the dignity of another person or used to intimidate, humiliate, degrade, hostile or create an offensive environment for the parties it is directed towards (Williams, 2017). It also covers the elements of indecent remarks, suggestive remarks, request for sex, demand for sex, dissemination of pornography and unwanted touching. As such there are a wide range of actions that can fall in this category, which most of the people do not have information on or simply assume they are normal relative to the normalization approach and ways of trivializing the matter for the victims and the perpetrators (Williams, 2017). There have been incidences where ladies have been subjected to sexual harassment and said to have ‘asked for it’ in their mannerism or dressing. Some aspects such as using suggestive language have been normalized as well in most of the cultures leading to constant attacks.
Common Sexual Harassments
There a number of sexual harassment, some of which are obvious, however there are those that are not and most of the people are ignorant of them. Some of the most common elements of sexual harassment at the work place include staring at a person in a way that is sexually suggestive or even whistling. This is common and in most of the cases it is considered to be normal (Doyle, 2017). Sometimes coworkers will also use suggestive and lewd jokes that carry sexual anecdotes, which could either be directed at men or women. It is also common that some of the coworkers in a practice that is normalized in the act of giving compliments to make sexual comments about one’s appearance, body parts or even clothing. In some of the cases, one may also be attacked with questions about their sexual history or their orientation. Making sexual gestures is also one of the ways that people are harassed at their work place. These are some of the most common, and they tend to be considered as normal (Doyle, 2017). Where persons that have experienced these will have repeat incidences such that they tend to view them as normal. At the same time there is also the element of cultural overtones that have trivialized these acts to make them seem insignificant, despite the fact that they are highly uncomfortable and that they are a violation on the victims. For most of the victims, reporting such incidences seems like a waste of time given that, such cases tend to be considered normal.
Uncommon and Extreme Sexual Harassments
However there are also those that are not very common and most of the cases, these are the tipping point for anyone that has been harassed before (Doyle, 2017). These include acts such as, coworkers sharing pornographic videos and images on emails and other messaging applications on mobile or the computer. There is also the case of getting letters and notes from coworkers which carry sexual messages. In some of the extreme cases, victims will be subjected to inappropriate touching, rubbing brushing, pinching and patting, which is purposeful. In some of the cases the jokes and comments will be extreme to point at a person’s sexual orientation or their gender identity. These are just a few of the examples of harassments that are directed at victims with the intent of flirting, being offensive or down right trying to intimidate someone (Doyle, 2017).
