Economics of Negeria Management Research Assignment

Research Paper Instructions:

The goal of this assignment is for you to get to know more about one developing country. As such, the first step of the assignment is to choose a country from the list provided on Google Docs. Each student should pick one country that nobody else has selected. I chose the Nigeria!!!!!!
For your chosen country, each student should prepare a two-page development overview. This is primarily a collection of facts about the country, and a contextualization of the facts. So, it is not enough to just say the poverty headcount ratio is 23%. Students should compare the poverty rate to its neighboring countries, and/or that country's recent history.
Here are some topics for which students may collect information:
− Poverty rates (demographic and/or geographic distribution)
− GDP/capita
− Education rates (literacy rates)
− Geographic overview (advantages and limitations as it pertains to development)
− Health outcomes (average age, expected lifespan, infant mortality, HIV incidence, etc.)
− Industry overview (primary industry, main exports/imports, etc.)
− Historical and institutional context (colonial history, wars, prominent religions,
revolutions, etc.)
Good sources of information for this overview include:
− national statistical agency of each country
− World Bank's World Development Indicators
− CIA World Factbook
− United Nations Statistics Division
− United Nations Human Development Reports
− The Economist
Essays should be formatted as follows:
− 12 pt font
− Double-spaced
− 1” margins
− References should follow a widely accepted standard. I recommend the APA style
o Tutorial: http://www(dot)apastyle(dot)org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx
− Overviews should be about 2 pages long
− Assignments should be turned in online to the turnitin assignment on Blackboard
Essays will be graded on the following criterion:
− Breadth of information covered
− Contextualization of facts
− Accuracy of information presented
− Clarity of presentation

Introduction
The level of development in a nation can be determined by its human development index. Human development index comprises of GDP, education level, life expectancy, health outcomes, political state, and poverty rates. The work covers a comparison of the various components of HDI in Nigeria and its neighboring nations such as Cameroon, Niger, Chad and Benin.
Poverty Rates
The poverty rate in Nigeria has recently increased to 61%. Current data indicate that the majority of the country’s citizens lives under one dollar a day. The same research shows that approximately 48% of Cameroon’s population also live under a dollar a day (Chasiotis, Kiessling, Hofer & Campos, 2006). Unluckily, Chad is viewed as one of the nations’ in the world with the highest rate of poverty. The poverty rate in the nation among those who are living in rural areas is about 87%. Contrarily, the poverty rate in Niger is approximately 43%, which shows a great decline over the years. The World Bank Group shows that the current poverty rate in Benin has improved over the years with the current figure being 42%. The data show that the poverty level in Nigeria is higher than its neighboring nations except Chad.
GDP
GDP shows the total output of a country by its resident persons. The data from CIA World Factbook indicates that the GDP of Nigeria is approximately 407 billion UD dollars. The GDP of Benin as indicated by World Bank Group is approximately 8.6 billion dollars and that of Cameroon is about 1,034 billion dollars (Sirgy, Lee, Miller & Littlefield, 2004). While the GDP of Niger and Chad are about 7.8 and 9.7 billion dollars respectively. From the data, Nigeria has the highest GDP after Cameroon.
Education Level
The education rates, as shown by HDI measure the literacy level among various nations. The current literacy level in Nigeria and Cameroon have improved over the years by almost 61% and 76%, respectively (Babatunde, Olorunsanya & Adejola, 2008). Also, Niger has experienced a rise in literacy level over the years with the current figure standing at 44%. However, Benin and Chad have shown a low literacy level of 41% and 35% respectively. The data indicate that Nigeria has the second highest literacy level after Cameroon.
