Leader Analysis: Akio Toyoda
Leadership can be described as the ability of an individual to guide, direct, and influence the behavior of other people so that they can achieve a common goal. Leadership is crucial in project management because the objectives of a project have to be met in very uncertain and ambiguous conditions. As Aga, Noorderhaven, and Vallejo (2016) indicate, project success is highly dependent on project leadership. There are different approaches to leadership that different leaders adopt to motivate their teams to act toward achieving a common organizational or project objective. This paper will investigate and analyze the leadership approach that Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), has adopted since he became the president. It will also examine his leadership characteristics as well as his motivational style.
Akio Toyoda’s Profile
Akio Toyoda joined TMC in 1984, shortly after attaining his master’s degree in business administration from Babson College in the United States (Toyota, n.d.). He has risen over the ranks at TMC, from a chief officer in 2001 to managing director in 2002, to senior managing director in 2003, and executive vice president in 2005. He eventually became the president of TMC in 2009 and under his leadership; TMC has faced and overcame so many challenges. Soon after he took over leadership, the company experienced a global recall where approximately 7.5 million vehicles were recalled due to safety issues (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, & Coulter, 2015). This happened in 2010 and the company’s reputation was hit hard as many consumers lost faith in the quality of Toyota’s vehicles. Then an earthquake occurred in Japan and affected Toyota’s global production. However, under the leadership of Mr. Toyoda, TMC has slowly risen back to its former glory.
Akio Toyoda’s Leadership
Mr. Toyoda’s leadership can be described as transformational. Transformational leadership involves a leader who guides change by encouraging, motivating, and inspiring their followers. Transformational leadership has four components namely; inspiration motivation, idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration (Aga, Noorderhaven, & Vallejo, 2016). Below is a description of each component and how it is depicted through Mr. Toyoda’s leadership:
* Inspirational Motivation
Inspirational motivation occurs when a leader creates a vision that inspires followers and increases their commitment to the organization’s/project’s objectives. Mr. Toyoda has used motivational techniques in his leadership to inspire his followers to accept and pursue his vision for TMC. For instance, Dawson (2012), through an article published in the Wall Street Journal indicates that Mr. Toyoda once put on a red and black racing suit and got behind the wheels as a way of not only inspiring his employees but also his customers. During this exercise, Mr. Toyoda was chanting in excitement, a gesture that encouraged his followers to be part of re-inventing the company after its reputation was damaged after the vehicles recall. Through this activity of showin...
