Scenario
It's been several days after the shooting at the local middle school, and details about the shooter have emerged.
The shooter—13-year-old John—had been bullied most of his life. His mother left when he was three, and his alcoholic father physically and emotionally abused him. John often went without food and clean clothes for days, and other children mocked and humiliated him. Desperate to escape the misery, John took his father's rifle and killed his father, whom he considered to be the source of his anguish. Then, John headed to middle school, seeking additional payback. John killed 14 students and three teachers, wounded five other people, and ultimately ended his own life.
Surviving students and teachers feel pain, anger, confusion, and guilt in the shooting's aftermath. They need your help to create a program that will help them effectively process the situation and deal with their emotions.

Mass shootings and terrorism incidents cause distinctive challenges such as trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, fear, and prolonged grief to the victims (Office for Victims of Crime, n.d.). Managing these challenges requires a coordinated, cross-sector approach among governments, non-profit organizations, and private entities to establish a practical approach (Tiry et al., 2020). Victims often need help recuperating from potential harms experienced by these events. The scenario is a real example of an incident likely to heighten the victims' mental problems. The shooting at the local middle school that led to the deaths and injuries of students and teachers left the survivors in pain, anger, confusion, and guilt. These survivors need assistance to process the situation and deal with their emotions effectively.
One of the interventions is offering psychological first-aid to surviving students and teachers. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed intervention to help survivors of a traumatic event and their families cope with the situation and manage their mental health (Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA, 2016). According to the Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA (2016), trauma-related distress like the school shooting can have a long-term impact. PFA employs momentary interventions to generate a long-term positive outcome. It is designed to minimize the initial trauma by allowing the survivors to express hard feelings while they develop coping strategies to deal with fear and anxiety.
Research indicates that this intervention targets students, families, and school personnel exposed to distressful events. It assists these individuals by establishing a positive link in a non-intrusive, empathetic manner, calming and orienting the emotionally overwhelmed, strengthening safety, and providing emotional and physical support (Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA, 2016). The intervention also empowers the individuals to participate in their recovery by acknowledging their coping efforts actively. Additionally, it helps them identify their immediate needs and concerns and offers practical support and information to address them.
An example of practical support is encouraging the survivors to minimize their exposure to media coverage of the event. Most survivors find that the reminders of a disaster strengthen their trauma. Excessive exposure to images and videos of a disturbing event intensifies the condition. Therefore, it would be prudent to encourage individuals to keep off social media or minimize its use if they want to recover. Encouraging the survivors to do regular physical exercise or offering to take them through the process is also a form of physical support. Regular physical activity is a significant way of managing stress and other mental problems. According to experts, regular exercise can positively impact a person's mood by relieving the tension, anxiety, anger, and mild depression associated with stress.
