Museum Pandemic Management Policies
The Carnegie Museums is among the most significant cultural institutions build and funded by Andrew Carnegie, whose fortunes trace back to the Pittsburg steel industry. The primary vision of the owner was to have the Museum used to exhibit the wonders of the world to millworkers and affluent members of the society. Egyptian artifacts, dinosaur remains, beautiful minerals, and exotic wildlife taxidermy were among the earliest collections shown at the Museum (Carnegie Museums of Natural History, 2020). Carnegie had a particular interest in dinosaurs hence the prominent display of the animal's skeleton at the Museum's entrance. The Museum has a large team of professionals ranging from Botanists, zoologists, entomologists, and anthropologists, ensuring that the place offers the best scientific insights into ancient discoveries. Over 100 years since its inception, the Museum has remained a significant place for scientific discoveries while maintaining its status of a world-class public institution in the face of all adversities. The Museum should consider adopting policies that promote local tourism, adopt friendly pricing models, introduce virtual platforms, and partner with other museums in less affected nations to survive pandemics.
The most effective means of ensuring continuity or sustainability of the Museum in the wake of global pandemics is developing measures that attract locals to the venue. According to Gosling, Scott, and Hall (2020) developing policies that attract local visitors is among the most sustainable before, during, and after pandemics. The main contributor to the above benefit is that local populations are less affected by containment measures and policies, such as travel bans and lockdowns. The pandemics like COVID-19 make real threats to the industry, hence the need to develop measures that offer individuals an opportunity to experience museums in their backyards. Christine (2020) affirms that people have become more interested in local museum experiences for their affordability and safety and its convenience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The local experience can be fostered through the promotion of exhibitions relevant to the local populations. The strategy also helps in enhancing the level of local appreciation and support for the museums’ programs and exhibitions.
The Museum should also focus on researches that determine the exhibition needs and interests of the locals. For example, people in Pittsburg love music and dancing, as seen through events such as Art all Night (Dougal, 2021). The Museum should incorporate policies that promote local cultural values such as dances and social interactions to enhance local attendance during pandemics. The approach would foster not only sustainability but also ensure long-term experience-based audience attraction. People who are used to specific experiences are more likely to make it a habit to keep tabs on the related events, further proving the effectiveness of incorporating local dance events into the exhibition plans. The approach also improves the ownership aspect among attenders. Show...
