GOD’S EXISTENCE
One of the ways to start a heated debate is to start up the topic of the existence of God. This is one of the debates that draws some opinionated and in some cases very eccentric viewpoints. Most importantly, it is one of those debates that is quite interesting regardless of the fact that it is ages old. There is a number of theories that have been used to try and deduce the elements of the existence of God ("Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper Part 1", 2017). Some argue for and others against. While the arguments about the existence of God may be seen to be trying to get the non-believers to join the believers, this is not entirely true. The main purpose is geared towards giving meaning to the element of faith to the believers.
According to the western philosophical tradition, the term ‘God’ is used to refer to a supreme being which is not like any other (Stanford University, 2017). This is from the monotheistic concept, where there is only one God of His Kind. Pantheism, on the other hand does not believe in the personal God, rather it is a term that is used philosophically to refer to nature or a higher power ("Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper Part 1", 2017). It is easy to see that, while there are subtle differences there are also parallel elements within the two definitions ("‘The Existence of God’ part two", 2017).
Another approach that has been used to try and explain the existence of God is through the natural theory (Brent, 2017). This is a program that is largely associated with making inquiries into the existence of God without the need to refer to divine revelations ("‘The Existence of God’ part two", 2017). Ideally, it is used in such a way that the researchers will ask themselves how the name can be used differently, will inquire about God knowing the future and free will of other creatures. All of these should be answered without using any of the sacred texts such as the Bible or the Koran among others (Brent, 2017). Using the elements such as history, science, reason, sensation and common humanity, people from different spiritual backgrounds are able to draw from such evidence other than the traditional sacred writing to come up with an explanation for God’s existence (Stanford University, 2017).
One of the main philosophies that is used in trying to prove that there is a God, is Thomistic Philosophy. This is associated with Aquinas. This is a philosophy that offers what could be considered as five ways to prove that God exists (Aquinasonline, 2017). Arguments on motion, causation, contingency, degree and the teleological argument wh...
