Background on endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition that results when there are endometrial glands as well as the stroma are found outside the uterus (Giudice, Evers & Healy, 2012). The tissue can be found in such areas outside the usual uterine lining to the abdomen extending to the fallopian tubes, ovaries and at times the ligaments supporting the uterus and around the pelvic area. The painful condition results for the tissues growing while also responding to menstrual cycles similar to the way the uterine issue does. Typically the uterine issue builds up and then breaks down, with the menstrual blood flowing from the uterus. However, the misplaced uterine tissue and blood has no way of flowing out of the body. This may then be associated with increased internal bleeding, organ adhesion form the tissue inflammation bowel problems scar tissue formation and at times fertility.
Causes
There is no consensus on the specific factor cause endometriosis, but several theories have been proposed for this condition. Genetic, biological and environmental factors may affect the profession of endometriosis to prompt the endometriosis to occur is some women more than others (The New York Times, 2015). One of the most popular explanations is that the womb lining fails to leave the body appropriately during menstrual periods where it is then attached to the pelvis (NHS, 2015). This is typically in the case of retrograde menstruation when the menstrual blood with endometrial cells flows to the fallopian tubes and pelvic area. The cells are then likely to stick to pelvic walls and the surrounding organs, and they are likely to grow over time during each menstrual cycle.
At times there can be embryonic cell growth lining the abdominal and pelvic areas can turn into endometrial tissue increasing the risk of developing endometriosis. This is typically because of the cells adapting to the environment.
At other times endometrial cells may be present outside the uterus, when the blood cells or lymphatic system transports the endometrial cells to other areas of the body (Mayo clinic).
Another possible explanation is that the immunity system may fail to protect against endometriosis because of low immunity, when the immunity is not able to recognize and eliminate endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
Signs and symptoms
The signs and symptoms vary considerably among women, and some may not show symptoms at all and are diagnosed when they are reported to suffer from infertility. Heavy periods, bleeding between periods, pain during or after sex, pain around the lower admen are and difficulty in getting pregnant are some of the most common symptoms of endometriosis (NHS, 2015). Other less common symptoms may characterize the problem including discomfort experienced during urinating. In most cases, the symptoms are dependent upon the area affected by endometriosis. Infertility problems could also be a symptom of the condition, with the symptoms typically more severe before and during the mistrial periods. However, other conditions may have similar symptoms to endometriosis, highlighting the importance of consulting physicians for the correct diagnosis.
