Research Paper Instructions:

For this project, you are asked to write a paper on the use of remote sensing to perform change analysis of a city or town in Connecticut. To accomplish this, you will need to make use of two different sources of remotely sensed images, Google Earth Pro and the UConn Air Photo Archive. The paper must be written in pros format, do not turn in an outline or list.
The Connecticut city or town is up to you – it can be Storrs, your hometown, a city you have visited often, or simply a city that is interesting to you. Your paper may include why you picked your particular city, its geographic location, historical and urban significance, demographic changes, current socioeconomic characteristics and challenges (e.g. traffic, public education, crime, housing), and future development plan (if applicable). Be sure to cite sources here. This information is ancillary to the main project, so don’t spend to much time on it.
Once you have selected a city, the task will be to:
First, open Google Earth Pro. You may have to install Google Earth Pro on your device. This link should take you to the download page for Windows https://www(dot)google(dot)com/earth/versions/#download-pro. If you have further questions or need help downloading Google Earth Pro, contact me or the TA at least one week before the due date of the assignment. Once Google Earth Pro is open, familiarize yourself with the interface, paying particular attention to the toolbar at the top of the screen. If you do not see this toolbar, select the “View” dropdown menu and make sure that the “toolbar” is selected. It should look like the image below.

Once you have familiarized yourself with Google Earth Pro, navigate to your chosen city or town and click the “Show Historical Imagery” button on the toolbar. Answer the following questions:
How far back do the images go for your study area?
What are the differences in quality between the oldest images and the newest?
Between the oldest and newest image, what has changed? Why do you think these changes occurred?
Include screenshots of the photos you chose to compare.
Next, access the UConn Air Photo Archive via this link (https://arcg(dot)is/14Gmv1) Follow the instructions on the pop-up menu to familiarize yourself with the interface. Once that is accomplished, turn on the layer for the year 1934. Navigate to your study area (Hint: You can use the search bar in the upper right-hand corner). Click on a point in your study area and download the tiff by scrolling to the bottom and clicking “More Info” next to “Download_T”. Answer the following questions.
What has changed between the 1934 air photo and the satellite images you got from Google Earth Pro?
What are the differences in quality between the 1934 image and the satellite images from Google Earth Pro?
How are historical images like this useful to geographers? How are they beneficial to non-geographers?
Include the air photo in your writeup.

The total paper should be at least 1,000 words (excluding references), double spaced with 12-pt Times New Roman font. Points will be deducted if the paper is under 1,000 words. Please submit your paper as .pdf or .docx file. The term paper has a due date at 11:59PM on March 27th. Projects are accepted for partial credit after the deadline, but after a 24 hour grace period, there is a penalty of 10% per day late. Projects turned in 6 or more days past the due date will receive a maximum of 50%.

You must use and cite at least five sources (this can include the textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, monographs, etc.). Do not simply quote materials in the text and the source, but paraphrase using your own words. The text or the outside source must be cited using a standard citation style (e.g. APA, MLA). Wikipedia is not a reliable source, and you will lose points for citing Wikipedia.

Introduction
Hartford is my choice of city in the state of Connecticut due to its size and historical nature. Being the capital city, Hartford experienced several changes in terms of urbanization hence a subsequent increase in population. While the city was a major hub in the past, its importance has declined over the years, causing a dip in the overall population. Additionally, the city possesses historical significance in the United States with sites such as the Mark Twain House and Museum (Dwight, 2010). Therefore, this city provides an adequate example of performing change analysis using remote sensing.
Google Earth Pro Photo Comparison
The Hartford City image goes back to 1984 on Google Earth Pro with dates past this year blurring out any significant details in the image. There are substantial changes in the quality of the images, the most recent ones in 2019 showing greater detail. This means that it is possible to zoom into individual sections of the city and be able to point out some of the objects. The 1984 version of the image subsequently blurs out with the increased zoom on the image, thus reaching a point where it becomes impossible to identify any landmarks. The most evident changes in the images include the reduction of greenery in the photo, possibly due to urbanization. With more buildings coming up, more land was used up, hence a decrease in the amount of vegetation. Other changes include differences in colors with previous images being less pronounced as compared to recent ones. Therefore, colors in the recent photos are richer and vibrant as compared to the older image. For instance, the river seems darker in the 1984 version of the photo as compared to the 2019 image that looks naturally blue. With such changes, it is possible to identify natural features such as rivers and any other naturally occurring objects such as hills.

Therefore, the quality of images has improved over the years due to the ability to update images on Google Earth Pro with each passing year. Camera quality has increased over the years, with more advanced cameras in use both in airplanes and satellites. Therefore, this has led to an increase in image quality, thus enabling the capturing of more details in images (Morgan, Gergel, & Coops, 2010).
