Research should be from four different academic sources (one of which must be at least one other peer reviewed journal article or scholarly book). The most common academic sources are journal articles, conference papers and books. However, a variety of other sources may also be relevant to your discipline, such as websites, reports, brochures, films and television or radio programs.

In contrast to paralegals and charter executive secretaries, lawyers are individuals who practice law as solicitors, barristers, counselors, attorneys, or advocates. Most lawyers research and write a case or legal brief, then present it to a judge or jury. Lawyers sometimes negotiate settlements of lawsuits and draft wills, trusts, contracts, and other legal documents (Baker, 2019). Lawyers or attorneys represent defendants in criminal processes, such as trials, appeals, and post-conviction relief, in the criminal justice system. In some jurisdictions, lawyers may represent victims of crime. Many lawyers also work in private practice or work for law firms. On the other hand, prosecutorial lawyers work for the government to prosecute people suspected of criminal offenses (Baker, 2019). Lawyers may specialize in a certain area of law, such as civil law (laws concerning private property and contracts), criminal law (laws dealing with crimes such as murder, assault, theft, and fraud), or family law (laws concerning marriages, adoptions, separations, and child custody). This essay explores the lawyer occupation in the criminal justice system, its functions, and its importance.
One can trace the history of the legal profession back to the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece (Sznycer & Patrick, 2020). Sznycer and Patrick (2020) state that the first written codes of law were created in these regions around 3000 BC. Over the centuries, the legal profession has evolved and expanded. In early modern Europe, lawyers provided legal counsel to monarchs and aristocrats (Sznycer & Patrick, 2020). As commerce and industry grew in late medieval Europe, so did the need for lawyers to represent businesses and individuals in legal proceedings. In the United States, law emerged as a profession in the 18th century. At that time, most lawyers practiced law alone or in small firms. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a blossoming of the law profession as more lawyers entered private practice (Shelden & Vasiliev, 2017). As the legal profession has evolved, so has the way lawyers practice law. In the 21st century, many lawyers work in large firms and practice law in different areas. The role of the lawyer continues to evolve as society evolves.
According to Terrill (2009), the criminal justice lawyer occupation has its roots in the English common law system. In this system, lawyers were needed to prosecute and defend court cases. The first criminal justice lawyers were likely lawyers who specialized in criminal law. Over the years, the criminal justice lawyer occupation has evolved to encompass a broader range of legal practices. Today, criminal justice lawyers typically provide legal counsel to individuals, groups, and organizations involved in criminal legal proceedings (Terrill, 2009).
