Introduction
Using the world wide web brings convenience and economic opportunity to American society. The use of this technology allows free and anonymous access for all people around the world. Local and abroad cybercriminals also take advantage of this ease of access to cyberspace. Cybercriminals target three aspects of society individuals, property, and the government. Wardynski (2019) argues that as technology increases and reflects the essence of a population's needs and culture, it becomes inseparable from human society. American society is one such culture that is in tandem with the cyber domain and is heavily influenced by cybercrime. Over the past decade, cybercrime has become a household name, impacting how American society does business online.
Problem
Over the past decade, American society has become more dependent on technology to do business and socialize, and even how conflicts with other countries are fought. Farahbod et al. (2020) argue that this dependence on technology and cyberspace has influenced how cybercrime affects society. The increase in cybercrime has become a sore point for many U.S. citizens and other entities, so much so that the U.S. government has created strategies and contingency plans to combat or reduce the effects of cybercrime. This study will explore cybercrime's impact on American society and evaluate the various methods developed to fight cybercrime.
Purpose
This research aims to investigate the effects of cybercrime on American society and identify solutions that can minimize the impact of cybercriminals. The study is skewed mostly toward a qualitative approach to identifying the impact of cybercrime on society. The qualitative approach provides an open-ended tactic for understanding how cybercrime influences culture. By researching how American society is affected by cybercrime, policymakers, IT professionals, law enforcement, and the U.S. government can adjust existing strategies and policies that govern the fight against cybercrime and cybercriminals. There are policies and guidelines set in place by policymakers to reduce the adverse effects of cybercrime on society.
Research Questions
This paper will focus on three primary research questions to comprehensively analyze the effect of cybercrime on American society. First, what is cybercrime? Second, who or what does cybercrime affect the most in American society? And finally, how do we minimize the adverse effects of cybercrime on American society?
Significance of the Study
American society depends on the internet to function and must become aware that cybercriminals pose a grave threat to their freedom and way of life. Cybercriminals can take identities, bring down companies and ruin lives. Therefore, American society and policymakers must be aware of these threats and continually change the cyber policy to minimize the adverse effects of cybercrime.
