Adverse childhood experiences (ACES)
Toxicity to the developing brain and long-term disorders might be the result of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include everything from physical and sexual abuse to household stressors like having a parent with a mental illness or seeing domestic violence (Schickedanz, 2021). Adults with more ACEs are more likely to suffer from a wide range of physical and mental health issues, such as heart disease and cancer, diabetes, addiction, depression, and anxiety.
Furthermore, children who have had an ACE are more likely to become a smoker or lose their employment or be incarcerated as an adult. Sexually transmitted infections are more common among teenagers, and they are also three times more likely to become pregnant. As adults, they are also more prone to have relationship issues (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). An adult's risk of alcohol dependence and problem drinking is exacerbated if the person was physically abused as a child. The more a person's ACE score, the greater their vulnerability to development of addiction (Schickedanz, 2021). ACEs are an underlying cause of the development of alcohol and drug problems. People with higher ACE scores are more likely to develop an addiction, and those with more substantial ACE scores are more likely to have a more severe addiction.
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma informed care (hereafter referred to as TIC) is a framework that guides organisations in adopting practices that can reduce the overall effects of trauma on people who have experienced trauma. The core principles are an amalgamation of the research and best practices, along with the lived experience of practitioners alike. The core principles of trauma-informed care are: safety, choice, collaboration, empowerment, and trustworthiness (Trauma-Informed Care Implementation Resource Center, 2021).
An example of how the principle of safety can be applied in your work is by creating an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for both you and your clients. This may include things like having a safe space to talk, providing resources and referrals for additional support, and using positive language  (Trauma-Informed Care Implementation Resource Center, 2021). Another example of the principle of safety is to develop your therapeutic relationship outside the session. When you’re able to build a strong relationship with your client outside the session, it will help to reinforce that you are safe. In the session, safety is typically built through the therapeutic relationship and trust. The principle of safety can also be established with some simple therapeutic tools. For instance, creating a safe space does not just refer to your office or the space you create for your client; it is about creating an emotionally safe space for your client through interventions.
