Nursing theory offers a systematic approach of defining what nursing is, reflecting at professional practice, and assisting to create knowledge to develop nursing profession in the future. In this paper, the theory of human caring (by Dr. Jean Watson) is selected because it forms the basis for professional nursing practice environment. According to the theory, caring starts with being present while being open to kindness, mercy, compassion, gentleness, and calmness with self before an individual can provide compassionate care to other people (Watson and Brewer, 2015). The theory of human caring concentrates on genuinely caring a patient in a holistic manner. This implies caring about the patient’s spirit, body, and mind in order for healing process to continue at most effective level.
Watson’s theory of human caring has today influenced nursing practice; thus it is important to incorporate the theory as a guiding principle to patient care. Applying the theory not only enables nurses to give holistic care to patients, but also enable nurses to effectively care for themselves as beings who also need holistic care.
