Nurse Shortage
Currently, nursing is the largest profession in the United States of America (USA). About 3.8 million USA citizens work as RNs. Interestingly, the USA still experiences shortages of healthcare nurses. Nurses play a significant part in the provision of healthcare services to clients. Regrettably, numerous nursing to other professions exists, which worsens the situation. Patient loads upsurge speedily because of staffing deficiencies in the healthcare profession. Besides, the number of patients needing primary healthcare services due to Covid-19 and other infections also increases (Samuel & Oliver, 2021). Both federal and county governments of the USA need to find a solution to the problem since it threatens the existence of human beings. People need treatments daily because they are vulnerable to various infections. Therefore, having few medical nurses to manage health issues can lead to high mortality and comorbidity. With close relation to the above analysis, the report discusses the impacts of the nursing shortage in my organization (family practice clinic) and evidence-based solutions.
The Impacts of Nursing shortage in our organization
According to the National figures, numerous nurses are almost clicking the retirement age. For example, about 30% to 50% of registered nurses, especially FNPs, are 55 years and above (Norful et al., 2018). Whereas a high number of graduating nurses is recorded, a massive number of retiring nurses is balanced. In our facility, there are about 50 family nurse practitioners. Only 28 out of 50 FNPs are 56 years and above. They have about 3 to 4 years to retire. It is stressful because the remaining nurses will be fatigued by sharing the medical roles left by the retiring FNs. Many medical schools have tried to increase the number of graduates, but the new nurses do not get absorbed into the nursing profession due to a lack of faculty and nursing labs (Samuel & Oliver, 2021). Besides, the governments take some time to replace nurses, which is a gradual process. On the other hand, our facility depends on few funds; hence, employing more nurses can challenge the organization's financial stability.
According to Hadad (2020), nurse shortage is a real issue around many USA care facilities where nurses handle many patients with complex problems. Consequently, nurses become fatigued leading to medical errors. Our organization suffers the same problem. For example, I handle about 35 patients in one day. Senior FNPs attend to even 43 patients per day. The number is excess according to the standard measure. FNPs are required to handle 20 patients per day. We get fatigued and demotivated to proceed with the duties. Moreover, some nurses get sick while others get admitted for specialized care. Since our organization has fee nurses, we found some patients trying to help themselves without the help of nurses. Some incidences have led patients to fall while others commit medical mistakes.
