Main idea
There has been much study on diabetes in different populations of people. In the article discussed, there is revelation of crucial knowledge concerning this ailment especially in the African American adults with diabetes type 2. Although some of the revelations are restricted to this category of the people, some of the knowledge is applicable to management of all kinds of diabetes in general across different ages of different populations. There is much emphasis on self management as an intervention to diabetes in adults. This follows the realization that; such intervention is very effective especially in consideration of the fact that; adults are able to understand some concepts unlike children.
Yeung, Oh & Tang (2014) maintain that; there is emphasis on self management education coupled with support intervention can go a long way in ensuring comfort and easy management of the ailment. Self management is an effective method of dealing with diabetes type 2, especially when dealing with adults. However, to achieve viable self management, it is crucial that the patients are given adequate self management education. The aspect of self management education has not been given the right attention in most cases because, healthcare providers have had assumptions that adults know what they should do. When it comes to health matters, it is crucial to understand that; lack of keeping to the required ways of management, especially from lack of knowledge, can lead to adverse implications. It is therefore crucial that, when the decision for self management of diabetes in adults has been arrived at, there are efforts to ensure that such patients have received adequate self management education, failure to which, there could be grievous consequences.
However, the study points to clear indication that, such self management education does not lead to reduction in health care patterns. Such healthcare patterns include acute care visits and non-acute care visits. The acute care visits denote the emergency department visits whereby, patients report in a critical condition, as well as frequency of hospitalization. Non acute care visits on the other hand denote the frequency of scheduled outpatient visits and change in patterns of healthcare use. Hawkins, Watkins, Kieffer et al (2015) assert that; there is positive impact of the self management education on sustained clinical and self care improvements. This can be attributed to the education offered.
