Pre-briefing is conducted before the actual clinical simulation, focusing on the expectations about the simulation process. Pre-briefing is important to improving student ability in the clinical setting, as they are able to anticipate patient needs better. The simulation phase also helps to develop necessary skills to make that facilitate clinical decision making and judgment. The simulation technique imitates working environment to allow learners to develop critical thing and decision making skills relevant to clinical practice (Page-Cutrara, 2014). Since simulation is a form of experiential learning, it is important to reflect and apply lessons learned in everyday practice. In order for the simulation process to be more effective in meeting the learning objectives, the pre-briefing should not be ignored.
The objectives of the simulation include understanding pathophysiology and the clinical manifestations of diabetes mellitus, while also improving the collaborative care of the patient with diabetes mellitus. The participants will also be made to understand the role of nutrition and exercise in the management of diabetes mellitus. Lastly, is describing the management of a patient with diabetes mellitus type 2. Simulation is an important aspect in improving learning outcomes, bridging the gap between theory and clinical experience (Lewis, 2007). Additionally, participation in the simulation process allows participants on reflect o the experience as this then improves the outcome of debriefing sessions.
The simulation exercise was performed in relation to a woman who had high blood sugar glucose level, with the primary medical diagnosis being diabetes mellitus type 2, and the patient also required cholecystectomy surgical procedure. Since simulation depicts a realistic patient situation, pre-briefing should focus on supporting learning as well as preparing participants to the simulation exercise (Lewis, 2007). In any case, simulation provides opportunities for a continuum of care, where participants interact with a familiar patient, and this may diabetes education as the simulation exercise also seeks to build trust and improve communication.
For the simulation exercise to be a success, the participants need to utilize the knowledge, comprehension and application skills as illustrated by Bloom’s six levels of taxonomy. The knowledge level helps to utilizing skills to recognizing information and principles related to diabetes mellitus. It is upon relying on knowledge that participants are able to use information to deal with problems. Comprehension takes into account, understanding and interpretation of information based on prior learning. At the same time, application skills are relevant to transferring data to applying knowledge to solve diabetes mellitus this is especially related to management of the condition.
