Relationship Between Pancreatitis and Inflammation.
Pancreatitis refers to inflammation of the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and lasts a short period, while chronic pancreatitis develops over a long period of time and lasts many years. The common causes of acute pancreatitis in U.S adults are alcohol and gallstones (Mederos, Reber, & Girgis, 2021). Pancreatitis that recurs may lead to the chronic form of pancreatitis. Inflammation is a response to injury and occurs when inflammatory cells migrate to the site of injury.
Acute pancreatitis occurs when digestive enzymes are activated while still in the pancreas, thus irritating cells and triggering inflammation. The proenzyme trypsinogen is produced in the pancreas and activated in the duodenum under normal circumstances. However, in acute pancreatitis, trypsinogen is converted to trypsin after coming into contact with the cathepsin enzyme. Trypsin further activates other trypsinogen molecules causing inflammation, edema, or ce...
