Research Paper Instructions:

Select a database from NCHS or complete a query using CDC WISQARS.
Select a specific health concern or injury using the population of your choice. Be sure not to limit your query so you have enough data to evaluate, and include a substantial time frame so you are able to identify trends.
Submit a 750-1,000 word report that provides an overview the database or query results. The report should consist of a demographic description of the chosen population including a review of noticeable trends in morbidity and/or mortality by race, gender, and geographic location where specified.
Based on the results and possible trends, present the implications for public health intervention or involvement.
In your report, include considerations of basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of epidemiologic data. As Chapter 13 of the text describes, focus on privacy and security issues surrounding protected health information and how HIPAA protects the confidentiality of the patient. Consider the ethical implications of whether public health organizations have too much latitude in the use and dissemination of epidemiologic data.
Use examples and evidence to support your report.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is one of the legal agencies in the US that collects and stores information on the implementation of policies and actions meant to improve the health of American citizens. NCHS carries out various surveillances on public health via the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of the data. Subsequently, the federal government uses the information to plan, interpret and analyze various public health practices and formulate effective intervention strategies. This paper evaluates the most recent statistics on obesity among grown-up in the United States contained from the NCHS database. The essay will particularly assess the latest obesity demographics among adults in the United States.
Demographics
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) (2017) indicates that obesity has been a long-standing health issue in the United States. Nevertheless, latest trends indicate that the prevalence of obesity among adults is reducing significantly and, in some places, it has declined altogether (Hales et al., 2017). At the state level, Washington, West Virginia, Minnesota and Colorado have high cases of obesity. However, in states such as Kansas the cases of obesity have significantly reduced, and in 2016 only a few individuals were found to be overweight. In one of the studies by Hales et al. (2017) contained in the NCHS database, the authors found that over 36.5% of adults in the United States are obese (Hales et al., 2017). According to the same statistics, the condition is accompanied by various other ailments which include cancer, type 2 diabetes, and stroke some of which have resulted in preventable deaths. Also, NCHS data reveal that a budget of approximately $147 billion is allocated to people suffering from obesity every year, which is $1.429 billion higher than that apportioned to the individuals with normal weight.
In the financial year 2015/2016, the prevalence of obesity among grownups in the US was 39.8%. Individuals aged between 40 and 49 had a prevalence of 42.8%, which is higher than that of age bracket 20-39 (35.7%) (Hales et al., 2017). For the elderly, the prevalence stood at 41.0%, and the condition was more likely to be accompanied by other disorders such as stroke and type 2 diabetes than in other age brackets. Further, there was a substantial discrepancy between men and women where obesity was more prevalent among women than men. Women from White, African American, Asian and Hispanic races had a prevalence of 38.0%, 54.8%, 14.8% and 50.6% respectively (Hales et al., 2017). On the other hand, men from White, African American, Asian, and Hispanic backgrounds had a prevalence of 37.9%, 36.9%, 10.1%, and 43.1% respectively. Finally, obesity cases differ according to the race and ethnicity. For instance, between 2015 and 2016, the prevalence was lowest among individuals from an Asian background (12.7%) compared to all other ethnic or racial groups. White, Black Americans and Hispanic adults had the prevalence of 37.9%, 46.8% and 47.0%, respectively (Hales et al., 2017).
