However, numerous ways have been adopted to help address nurse burnout, with some attaining some level of success and others still falling short. While its influence may not seem direct, leadership is among the key ways that have led to the successful reduction of nurse burnout in healthcare organizations. According to Wei et al. (2020), the leadership style within a healthcare organization directly impacts the rate of nurse burnout. The researchers continue to indicate that a leadership that is transformational is key to maintaining a positive working environment. Hall, White, and Morrison (2022) echo similar sentiments noting that leadership that fosters a positive environment leads to improved job satisfaction and loyalty rates. Further, a high retention rate is also highly likely to be evident as an effect or outcome of positive leadership. The adoption of a leadership style that hinges on authenticity and is people-oriented could, in turn, transform the state of an organization.
Aside from leadership, another strategy that has been used to address nurse burnout with great success entails the adoption of support programs. Different support programs have proven successful in helping to address nurse burnout. Mealer et al. (2014) proposed the use of resilience training to help nurses develop coping skills to help deal with burnout. Coping skills or strategies as a counter-activity to reduce nurse burnout are considered quite successful, according to Maresca et al. (2022). Maresca et al. (2022) note that the best and most apt strategies ought to entail emotional, social, and physical support. Further, Matsuo et al. (2021) indicate that support programs to provide nurses with better work-life balance lead to reduced rates of nurse burnout. These sentiments are echoed by Kelly, Lefton, and Fischer (2019), who indicate that it becomes incredibly difficult for nurses to balance their work and lives with pervasive challenges within healthcare organizations. Therefore, there is a need to expand these support programs and ensure that all nurses have schedules that guarantee a favorable work-life balance.
An improvement in the nurse-to-patient ratio has also been a probable strategy that has an incredible potential of reducing nurse burnout in the healthcare sector. Nurse-to-patient ratios point to the glaring staffing issues that continually impact the healthcare sector. One issue that leads to the worsening of the nurse-to-patient ratios is nurse shortage. Shah et al. (2021) note that nurse shortage leads to nurses' poor scheduling and welfare support. With poor staffing levels, it becomes increasingly difficult to address the problem of nurse burnout.
